#1 Both Spurs goals were from FK that should never have been given.
#2 Liverpool had 2 legit penalties waved away
Liverpool did not have a great game but still played well enough to win. Too bad the ref decided to be a retard and get all the important calls wrong.

Liverpool should have created some scoring chances instead of always capitalizing on red cards and pennos. Should have kept Alonso to get opposing players sent off if nothing else;)
Btw, it's Phil Dowd and yes he is a fecking retard. However, take it easy boss. It's only 1/38.

Oh dear :o
We lost to a better team. Heck, ought to have been 4-0 at half-time, if Keane could half shoot!
Now let's move on.

No, you really didn't. Liverpool were very much second best on Sunday. The late penalty claim was possibly legitimate, but that doesn't dismiss the fact that Liverpool deserved to lose. Tottenham were the better side from start to finish. As RB said, had it not been for Robbie Keane's generosity it could have been a lot worse.
Too bad the ref decided to be a retard and get all the important calls wrong.
In comparison to some of the calls made this weekend, you got away very lightly.
To be honest, the 1st game of the season isn't that big a deal. I know it's nice to start as you mean to go on but it's really a drop in the ocean the is the season ahead.

#1 you are mental, the first freekick in particular should have been a yellow for Skretal, he took Palacios out when Wilson was on a run into the area.
#2 first incident was shoulder to shoulder, would never have been given against Liverpool at Anfield if that was Carragher on Defoe. Instead it would have been "strong defending". Second incident is only a penalty to someone ignorant of the rules.

I'm pretty sure I saw something that said referees (or it may have been ex-refs) had spent substantial time with clubs over the summer explaining things like handballs and what makes them intentional. Obviously Benitez wasn't paying attention.

Robbery or snobbery?
It doesn't matter who you are, how many league titles you've won, how many European Cups you've won or who has the most expensive squad.
If you want to win football matches then you have to turn up and play well. In order to "deserve" a draw or awin you have to earn it. It's no good turning in a lacklustre performance and then bleeting about one or to refereeing decisions after the final whistle has gone.
Liverpool may have got a draw had the referee seen the infringement on Veronin, but two questions need to be asked really.
1) How did Liverpool allow Tottenham Hotspur to boss the game from start to finish, whilst in the process allowing them create 3 or 4 guilt edged goal scoring opportunities, had which any of them been taken the score could have been embarassing?
And
2) Why did it take an Andry Veronin penalty appeal in the last minute to create any sort of chance for Liverpool to get back into it in the first place?
If Liverpool were as good as they believe, then firstly they should not be relying on penalty appeals, and secondly they should not be relying on Andry Veronin.
People pointed out Liverpools lack of strength up front towards the end of last season when Rafa sold Robbie Keane and had only Gerrard and Torres as 5-star strikers. Keane may not have done it at Liverpool, regardless of how he was utitlised, but lets be honest, his movement on Sunday was brilliant and on another day might have had a hat-trick.
Against Tottenham the most striking (sorry, no pun intended) thing about Liverpool was that Torres was frequently left isolated as Gerrard reverted back to type, leaving his post, and went off foraging for the ball in an effort to provide some attacking imputes. With another striker, perhaps one like Robbie Keane, that might not have been such a fatal flaw.

To be fair Tottenham have a strong team and are in top form right now. ManYoo will also get beaten at the Lane.

Liverpool DID NOT play well enough to win against Spurs. And this is coming from a West Ham fan.

Personally I'd like to think we have what it takes to beat Tottenham, but against Liverpool, and simnce to be honest, I've been impressed with them.
We'll see how it goes. Our team still has it's flaws which I personally think need addressing.

Probably not a great idea to post while somewhat drunk. Obviously everyone knows its Dowd. Unfortunately you can not change a title once you save the thread.
We may not have played well but it does not excuse the ref from being a moron.

Liverpool lost because Spurs were by far the better team on the day. Nothing to do with Phil Dowd.
As to your claim that neither of the free kicks leading to Spurs goals should have been awarded, you couldn't be more wrong. Mascherano brought down Palacios. Clear contact. Foul.
For the second, Jamie Carragher lost concentration and suddenly realised that Defoe was getting away from him. So he clearly stuck his arm across Defoe's throat. Clear and deliberate obstruction. Foul and yellow card. A player's reaction to such decisions is always telling. There was no argument from Carragher. He knew what he had done. He had taken one for the team - the yellow card was a fair exchange for the professional foul.
As to Liverpool's penalty claims, let's deal with the handball first. The ball was kicked at Assou Ekotto from a distance of less than five yards. He had no time to react. Furthermore, his arms weren't spread wide in an attempt to block the ball. His hand was in front of his chest when it was struck by the ball. In other words, it was ball to hand - not vice versa - and Spurs gained no advantage (since the ball would have been blocked by Ekotto's chest if not his hand). In such circumstances, a penalty should never be given.
Secondly, the shoulder barge by Ekotto on Voronin. Some have debated that it was a legitimate shoulder barge. But I disagree. The ref should have awarded a penalty. However.......
....only 15 seconds earlier, Peter Crouch jumped for a header two yards inside the Liverpool penalty box. Jamie Carragher made no attempt to jump. He just barged into the back of Crouch and nudged the Spurs player out of the path of the ball. Clear and deliberate foul. Should have been a penalty to Spurs. Dowd had a perfect view but lacked the cojones to make the right call.
If he had made the right call, then the Voronin / Ekotto incident would never have happened. And the score would most likely have been 3-1 to Spurs instead of 2-1.
So stop moaning and count yourselves lucky!
P.S. Liverpool got a bit more help from the ref yesterday. 2-1 down against Bolton until Davis' sending off. It was an entirely accidental tangle of legs. A free kick, maybe, but it should never have been a yellow card (Lucas' behaviour was despicable). Without Bolton being down to ten men, it is debatable whether Liverpool would even have equalized, let alone won.

You were pretty correct about the Spurs match but then ruined your good post by your final paragraph.
Davis was on a yellow and illegally tripped Lucas who was on a dangerous run. These fouls that break up sudden counter-attacks are almost always given as yellows.
I guess you did not actually watch the entire Bolton-Liverpool match? Bolton had 3 shots on target, scored twice from set-pieces against the run of play and had a whopping 20% of possession despite being the home side! According to Sky, LFC had 24 shots, plus 8 blocked shots, hit the crossbar plus had 11 corners and 80% of possession! And you say LFC were lucky to win? LOL.
The scoreline clearly flattered Bolton who were fortunate not to concede more than 3 goals. Bolton's play during the match was extremely poor.

Having seen opposition players sent off last season on 10 seperate occassions (that's nearly a quarter of all their leagues games) it came as no surprise to me to find out that they, once again, were given the luxury of having a man advantage against Bolton for a sizeable portion of the game.
I do not, for a single second, believe that theres anything dodgy at play here, but surely some Liverpool fans must wonder how many times they're going to see opposition players see red? Surely it cannot continue.

Well folks might equally wonder how Fletcher did not give a pen away at OT for scything down Arshavin in the box. There are many mysteries to ponder.
It's all very well citing 10 occasions when opposition get sent off against LFC but if you actually go back and look at the incidents you will see they were all deserved apart from the Lampard one. You are not suggesting Vidic's 2 clear Reds cards against LFC last season were undeserved but merely part of a Ref conspiracy?
Opposition players will continue to get Reds against LFC as long as they continue committing a yellow card offence when already on a yellow, deny clear goal-scoring opps, use violent conduct and undertake other actions which merit cards.

Quite why you felt the need to defend or justify anything is beyond me, especially when I very clearly said:
I do not, for a single second, believe that theres anything dodgy at play here
It was simply an observation that these days Liverpool seem to benefit from seeing players sent off almost on a weekly basis, which isn;t entriely inaccurate, is it?
Well folks might equally wonder how Fletcher did not give a pen away at OT for scything down Arshavin in the box.
I won't get drawn into a dicussion over a match incident of little importance in a bid to draw attention away from the subject in hand except to say that Fletcher did not "scythe down" Arshavin at all. It was a robust challenge, but nothing more.
For some reason we seem to have gotten it into our heads that any challenge of a remotely physical nature in and around the penalty box should be punished with a penalty. Football is being pû55yfied by players and fans who cannot contemplate anything other than a passing game where players are allowed to pass the ball freely brtween on-another until one of theputs a pass astray and a new period of play begins.

We live in a peculiar society don't we? Racism is deemed bad, and racist comments are now completely unacceptable in both football and on sites like this. Yet it is still apparently acceptable to insult disabled people using words such as 'retard'. It's not as trendy an 'ism' you see - anti-racism gets good PR, anti-disability doesn't really interest anyone. Same for homophobia actually - perhaps you might also like to call Phil Down 'gay'?
Maybe you feel comfortable to call someone a retard, and maybe no one else considers that unacceptable, but that says something about which prejudices we tolerate and which we punish.
Maybe John Lennon should have said 'Retard is the ************ of the world' instead.
edit - and there is the proof. ************ is asteriked out (niggger for those who wondered what it was), retard isn't. Point proved.

In all fairness the lad in question did admit to being drunk and offered something approaching an apology.
Personally I've never used to word "retard" but that's primarily because I can think of far better words to describe someone's questionable intellect, if I ever needed to call it into question at all
"Imbecile" is my word of choice but every man to his own................ :)
