Well the last minute loss to Bristol Rovers really blows, but hopefully we can beat Gillingham on Saturday and end up in positive points for once this season!!

By the way, did you hear that Portsmuff has been unable to pay some of their players' saleries? :D I think that should be grounds for a 10 point deduction!! I sure wish they go into admin and end up relugated at the end of the season. Unfortunately, it will be another year before the Saints end up getting promoted to the Championship, but at least we are finally financially "healthy"!! :D

The start of the season hasn't been sexy. But, at least IMHO, the way to build a team is first to not lose and then build off of that. Saints aren't quite there but only losing 3 of their first 12 is a good start. If not the -10 points (as if relegation to league one wasn't a huge punishment in itself), this team would be mid table. I wouldn't write these guys off yet to squeak into the playoffs.

Adam Lallana notched a goal in each half as Southampton's 4-1 thrashing of Gillingham at St Mary's moved Alan Pardew's side on to two points for the campaign.

Again, I don't want to curse the boys but they've won 3 out of their last 5 with a draw and a loss making up the remainder. There's still plenty of games left to play. Let's hope Pardew can continue to get their play to improve.

"Mr Southampton" devoted his life to the club and did more to build Saints into a respected top-flight football club than any other individual. But he also played for the club for 15 years, joining his former Norwich City manager Tom Parker at Saints in 1937 on his nineteenth birthday. He was steeped in the club when, on June 8, 1940, he married Mary Smith at St. James's Church and that evening watched Saints play Charlton Athletic at The Dell. After the war, Bates and the prolific Charlie Wayman were the club strikers but Bates played in every position, including in goal. In 1953, he retired from playing as Saints sank into the Third Division (South) and he began 50 years of backroom graft, from manager to chairman, until his death in 2003. In 2001 he was appointed MBE, and continued to play an integral part in Southampton's affairs as the club relocated from his beloved Dell to their new St Mary's stadium. After Bates's 66 years of faithful service, there was a case for naming it Saint Ted's.

David Connolly's second-half debut double helped Alan Pardew's Southampton see off Bristol Rovers 3-2 in the FA Cup first round despite a spirited late comeback by the home side.

Connolly, making his first start after joining Saints as a free agent, broke a tense deadlock in the 63rd minute when he swept home a left-footed effort from Adam Lallana's cross to put the in-form visitors in front.

And just five minutes later Connolly effectively booked the 1977 Cup winners' place in round two when he placed another low shot past Rovers keeper Rhys Evans from a Michail Antonio cross.

Antonio added a third for Saints two minutes later after a long ball forward from Richard Lambert.

Rovers kept pressing and a goal from Darryl Duffy and a Jeff Hughes penalty ensured some anxious final moments for the visitors.

Good game! Rickie is just amazing and good for Wayne, it sounds like we were very unlucky not to be up by way more with Anotonio hitting the post and the non-call with the handball but the important thing is that we're through! Maybe we'll be going to Wembley eh? :D

Just under 14000 crowd for a mid week JPT game, best crowd of the round again.
Good atmosphe, Saints got off to a great start, Hammond should have put us one up inside 3 minutes, and how that ball that hit the bar and the post and didn't go I will never know.

Great first goal for Thomas, well put away, and well deserved, and what about that run down the wing in the second half from him, trouble is he didn't know what to do when he got into the area, eneded up crossing on the roof of the net.

Fantastic 2nd goal, ball out onto the right, half way into the Charlton end, taken fantastically by Papa, a quick turn and lay off inside to Lallana, then back to Papa who slid it forward back to Lallana who stepped inside, laid off to the centre of field just on 18 yard baox, and Ricky hammers it past the goalie diving to his right.
Last 10 minutes were on the back foot, and they got one back, but never really in trouble.

Hammond looked good in the middle as captain, don't think it will be long before he gets it permently :D
