Should DC trade away a forward?

I wondered what people might think about trading away one of our front-runners for a defender or perhaps a keeper. We have Jaime, Adu, Esky, Cerritos, Martins. Surely we could let one go. Of course Jaime and Freddy are not going anywhere, but the any of the other 3 could be trade bait. Martins being hurt probably means we would not get anything for him, but Cerritos might get us something, and surely Esky would get us something.

The Crew cannot score goals (at least not before this Sun at Chicago). They are weak up front. Could we trade them Esky for John Bush? I saw him play for UNC-Charlotte in his college days, and he is certainly better than Rimando. He was outstanding against Chicago yesterday.

Any other thoughts?

Why would the Crew trade away the one guy most responsible for keeping them in games? Busch was huge against the Fire. Do they even have a backup keeper? We also have the Q's as possible trade bait but they porbably have little to no value. We don't need a new keeper we need a couple of defenders.

None of the guys that are currently hurt have any trade value until they come back and start producing.

This is part of why it's hard to sort out a trade right now, as United hasn't had its full roster yet this season.

-- Will Martins be the answer, with his physical presence in the box?

-- Hell, will he still have that presence after comnig back from his ACL injury?

-- Will Quintanilla be able to contribute when he comes back? Will he have any of that speed to go with his decent amount of skill?

-- Will Quaranta finally be able to string a few good performances together? Will he be more at home up front or on the wing?

-- If neither, will we be able to sell him to Hearts of Oak like Sachin was talking about? Do they have any good strikers that want to move to America?

-- Will Bobby be sold, which would free up some cap space?

The answers to these questions will dictate if a trade would make sense.

And there's no way columbus trades Jon Busch right now.

We need to trade a forward if for no other reason that for Quaranta, Quintanilla, Adu and Eskandarian to develop, they need PT. If we didn't have Cerritos and Moreno, there would still be too many youngsters to give them PT.

We can't trade Eskandarian. It's not that I think he's god's gift to strikers, it's that we're capped challenged. We can't part with any P-40 players unless we get a P-40 player in return. That is reality.

This team has a lot of players who are not at max salary (stewart is) but are substantially above MLS minimum: Kovalenko, Olsen, Convey, Petke, Nelsen, Cerritos, Moreno, Quaranta, Prideaux and Rimando. Prideaux is a bargain at $70K given his versatility and experience. You could argume all of them are underpaid (and I wouldn't disagree) but given the MLS cap, we can get better values for the team in a number of instances.

We need a finisher far more than we need a GK or defender. A good finisher who adds 3 goals in 3 games for this team and we'd have a lot more points than we have now.

We probably need to cut or trade 2 strikers in order to create enough cap room to be able to trade for or acquire a finisher. I'm assuming the guys we'd probably clear eventually are: Cerritos and ....Martins or Quintanilla if it's about creating PT, Quaranta or Petke if it's about cap space, Kovalenko if it's about fit (he's not our A-mid, I think we'll have the D-mid positions handled and Nowak has said he's not a good outside mid).

Despite his high cap value, I'd be wary of trading Cerritos for a number of reasons.

First of all, his production on a per minute basis is higher than most of the forwards on United.

Secondly, he looks dangerous most of the time he is out there, especially in the final 10 minutes against the Rapids last weekend.

Finally, with the unknown situation of Chivas next season, he might be valuable in a trade to them if they are hell bent on using anyone with a latino last name.

I wouldn't even consider a possible trade next season to a team that may not exist then. Let's focus on the present.

Considering that I doubt United will make any trades until they get their other 3 attacking players back from injury which happens to be after the date that rumors say the MLS expansion rumor is coming, I say it's still a small factor to consider.
