it is the dream of every nation on earth to have a team in south africa next summer. in this case every a group from outer space have arrived in jberg!
sorry, i couldn't resist.

so this friday there's a new movie coming out about aliens who have come to earth and are placed in slums in south africa (it takes place during a time when apartheid was still in effect)

one of the shots of the trailer shows the awesome image of a giant spaceship howering over johannesburg. now this may bring back memories of man's greatest triumph (remember when we repelled an alien invasion during on independence day 1996?) but i can assure you that this is unlike any alien invasion movie you've ever seen!

it looks like a fresh scifi film and i'm interested in checking it out, probably not for the midnight showing but maybe over the weekend. what do you guys think about it?

Just judging by the trailers and previews it looks horrible. I don't think I'm going to see it unless the reviews say its great.

Put an [r] in the title. That preview seems to give away a ton.

That's my thought too. It's impossible for me to resist, even if it turns out shit.

I'm interested to know why you've given away so much of this?

Thank heavens I put an embargo on reading info about this pic before seeing it, which is something I would advise all to do.

Just saw it, awesome. One of the best sci-fis this decade.

I though it was solid. It seemed like it might have gone off the rails at a couple of points but managed to hold on throughout. Certainly one of the best I've seen in quite a while. Great looking aliens, too.

I'll say more when others join in here.

I'd say the first 45 minutes were outstanding. Then too much unnecessary action and typical plot points. I liked it more than this post might suggest though. Definitely top ten sci fi of the decade. Much better than Children of Men.

I'm inclined to agree. Maybe it was because I had high hopes, but I found myself leaving the theater a little disappointed. I thought that there was a very original idea they had working for them that turned into excessive action and typical story lines repackaged to fit into the film. I just saw so much potential as the early portion unfolded and then the film really failed to develop. I would give it a B-, but will definitely watch it again to see if I've missed something.

Ultimately disappointing, but worth going to see.

now why didnt the humans just ask them about why their ship crashed?

why didnt we just help em out of earth?

what exatly caused the main character to turn to alien? i know it was the oil but isnt that just fluid to fly the ship?

SPOILER ALERT

now why didnt the humans just ask them about why their ship crashed?

Because of the weaponry.

what exatly caused the main character to turn to alien? i know it was the oil but isnt that just fluid to fly the ship?

doesn't matter. That was the MacGuffin.

The "oil" -- it was a fluid but never referred to as oil or anything of that nature -- must have contained alien DNA, which is also how the aliens were able to access their technology and humans couldn't.

They show the process of the fluid being extracted or created, but I'd have to see the film again and pay more attention to that scene.
