Emilia Adu couldn't have been prouder of her son Freddy's sensational goal for D.C. United on Wednesday night at RFK Stadium. But what will truly fill her heart with maternal joy will be watching her eldest boy's performance today in Bradenton, Fla.

Twelve days before his 15th birthday, United's precocious forward will receive his high school diploma.

I'm loving this:

Wednesday's goal "boosts my confidence a lot, it really does," Adu said. "Guys better watch out now because I'm back to my old me."

I'm hoping that getting his HS diploma and seeing the hype die down a little bit alows him to re-focus.

He's back to his "old self"? Eeegads, Freddy, you're only 14!

--I think this means he's going to start playing more like all of those 10-year olds still in Ghana that are so much better than him

What's the over/under on how many goals Freddy scores until he starts referring to himself in the third person?

Cantankerous believes that it will happen after Freddy gets his half-century.

"I worked hard for a long time to reach that stage in my life," Freddy said. "I'm just going to enjoy it because I earned it."

What?

He finished high school in 2 years. That's not a long time.

And how many stages of life does a 14 year old have?

Considering all the crap he has gone through, growing up in Ghana, moving to America, having dear old Dad ditch out, spending several years away from the family in Florida, now DC United...I'd say he's had alot of stages at age 14!

What do you mean by "...all the crap he has gone through, growing up in Ghana..." Have you ever been to Ghana? What do you know about Ghana? Don't be decieved by the discovery channel b'cos Ghana is a very decent place.

Dude, improve your reading comprehension. He's just saying that he started there and ended up here as part of "all the crap he's gone through" not that Ghana is a bad place.
By your logic 'moving to America' would be bad too.

Damn, why are so many people hating on Freddy Adu. I believe in Freddy and I think he will be a great player. He is already a great player in my eyes. Why all the criticism, hate, and jealousy? Congratulations Freddy on graduating high school. I think that's what most of us should be saying. You people talk about stages in his life, I think he has had a lot of stages in his life. At this point in his life, scoring a goal is a stage; getting an assist is a stage. The media and all of you haters always try to bring someone down.

Freddy Adu is a great player !!!!!!!!!!!

We don't hate Freddy.

We hate the cliches. It seems like IMG Academy must offer a couple of classes in them.

Hey, fatbastard, while I understand (and agree with) your sentiment, there are many, many people to whom moving to America is not an unmitigated success.

Wow, that's a downer of a thought for a soccer forum, no?

Agreed.

If Freddy says 'floodgates' again, I'm going to scream.

No doubt, but I was talking in the context of that sentence, which the responder took one tiny fragment out of and said it meant something it didn't say. I'd say for Freddy, moving to America turned out pretty well :)
