Here's the player in question:
Mikey Payne (26626989)
23 years, inadequate form, healthy
A popular guy who is temperamental and dishonest.
Has wretched experience and passable leadership abilities.
Assessed value: 195 000 US$
Stamina: excellent Goaltending: disastrous
Playmaking: poor Passing: inadequate
Winger: weak Defending: passable
Scoring: solid Set Pieces: wretched
He's my best forward... and also my best central defender. Obviously he can't play both, so I've been using him mostly on defense. At this point in my young team's history, am I better off selling this guy? I can probably pick up a decent forward & central defender with the profits.
Hattrick Buddy gives a transfer price of ~$175,000. Does that sound about right?

It's a tough call. He would make a very good forward if you chose to play him there, but I don't think you'd be able to buy both a solid CD and solid forward to replace him (if that was your intention). Passables in each might be done, and I don't really think you'd be able to find a forward with passable scoring and inadequate passing either. If you need an influx of cash then sell him and purchase a few new players, but if you are sitting good, then keep him and maybe buy a defender to replace him there and play him as a forward.

I had a problem like this when I started, I had and still have, a player who was a passable scorer, passable IM, and solid defender, I played him everywhere on the field, I had thought about selling him once or twice when I was in trouble, but I decided to keep him, and after some time as an IM he is now a good defender holding the position. While you can get decent players for him, it depends on a few things as well, like do you have decent defenders and scorers to replace him? I at the time didn't have many players that could replace my guy so I kept him.

I had a guy who was solid in defense, passing, and setpeices, he was passable in winger and scoring.
After the end of my first season (half season) I sold him for around 400K bought two middies, and all my trainees.......
i would sell, early on getting the training program going is more important than the results.

Hattrick Buddy gives a transfer price of ~$175,000. Does that sound about right?Personally, I don't think the passable defending adds enough value to him to change the price significantly -- it makes him usable in a press, but people will really be looking at the solid scoring and inadequate passing when they bid. If he's surplus as a forward, certainly you should transfer him and get a better defender. However, I'd guess he's one of the best forwards on your squad and, if you're not training scoring, you'd be unlikely to get better value (particularly considering that he's popular with passable leadership, and so a potential clown-quality team leader).
