Lauth interview here (http://www.merkur-online.de/sport/tsv-1860/lienen-weiss-erfolgreich-ist-mm-433290.html?cmp=defrss). Translation below....

Q: Benny Lauth , only three starting players from the 2008 season are still around for the start of this season: Mate Ghvinianidze , Lars Bender and yourself. Have you ever experienced such high turnover?
A: No, I don't think so. But I think anyone can see the reasons. After last season, no one likes surprises, and I am unaware of many people who do.

Q: The team must have felt as if things did not fit together?
A: The did fit together, we understood one another very well. But on the field we did not achieve what we wanted. In the end we fought against relegation. That is why it was clear that something needed to change.

Q: What was missing from your standpoint? Quality? Hierarchy? The inexperience of the trainer?
A: Realistically, it was the roster that was not strong enough in order to play with the top teams. We had hoped everyone would be fit, but that was not the case. Daniel Bierofka was injured a while and the Benders were out occasionally. And after the poor start it was difficult to get back in the hunt. In the end, to come out in 12th was deserved.

Q: In the meantime, not only have large parts of the team have been changed, but also the trainer, co-trainer, sport director and the CEO. Did you sometimes feel like a stranger in your own club?
A: Not exactly, but it is always difficult when the demands are high, there is no money to retrofit the missing positions. It was obvious that after the third loss that the trainer was going to be let go.

Q: Speaking of Marco Kurz, you are friends with him. Was it hard for you to see him leave? He was one of the reasons you came back to 1860, no?
A: Naturally was he a key reason, but it was clear to me that there is always a chance for trainers to be let go. I was always able to discern between my Friend Marco and the Trainer Marco.

Q: What do you expect from your new team? The results and the performances have awaken a great hope within the fans.
A: Also in previous years we've had good pre-season results and performances and won pretty much each game 1-0. That won't achieve the results we need, so it was important that we won our cup match and began a good start. If you can win an away game against a tough opponent it is a definite milestone, and with a successful home game can we get the ball rolling for the season.

Q: What has coach Ewald Lienen awoken within the team?
A: The fans are clearly from the onset behind him, that is very important. But even when he is at odds with the team it is not public and that is a positive signal. Apart from this he conducts a good training. Now I hope that his ideas can be implemented so that we are successful.

Q: What distinguishes Lienen exactly?
A: He knows how to be successful. He doesn't tell you about what he read somewhere, but what he himself has experienced...with Cologne, he achieved promotion. Generally he takes a lot of time, often interrupting the training to explains in detail every situation, to shed light on situations and where the fault may lay.

Q: Off the pitch Lienen appears casual, almost witty. Would you have expected him so affable?
A: I knew him only from his press conferences and brief interviews from the television, and from those you cannot really see a person. That he comes across so positively and honestly I would have expected.

Q: Let's talk about the newbies. Hand on your heart: Which player with the exception of ex-Hertha goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly and the former St. Pauli player Alexander Ludwig you were previously familiar?
A: (laughs) The Tunisian League is indeed not something that is available to watch, so I knew nothing of Radhouène Felhi previously. Florin Lovin I had heard of as HSV played against Rapid Bucharest and the winner would take on Steaua. But otherwise. . . Ludwig and Kiraly for the most part.

Please educate me:

Why does the thread title start with "Einmal Löwe--Immer Löwe" ? Is 'Löwe' a nickname for the club like 'sechzig' (sixty) ?

"Löwe" is "lion" in German. This is 1860's crest;

I think Cris covered most of your question. But let me get what he missed:

Einmal Loewe, Immer Loewe means "once a lion, always a lion". The club has a long, long history of taking care of their own. Players always seem to come back to the club whether to play again, coach, work in the FO or something else.
1860 is when the club was founded. Like most sports organizations in Germany, each "club" will have several departments like football, gymnastics, track, etc. I would be like if FC Dallas was combined with several different sports under one umbrella.
The football part of 1860 was founded in 1899...one of the oldest in Germany.
The lion comes from the clubs original mascot and has continued since. There was a close relationship with Loewenbraeu a while back, but that is no longer as close....though the bier is still served.
Sechzig or Sech'zge means sixty, as you guessed. It is obviously short for 1860.
Club colors are white and blue...in that order. Never, ever say blue/white....that gets the die hard fans upset.....like calling an FCD fan a Dynamo fan almost. :D
BTW, Cris knows almost as much about 1860 as he does his own club. He has no job. He is independently wealthy and just blogs about soccer all day long. He owns his own island and is currently dating Meagan Fox. Other than that he's not a bad guy.

yeah,

but the slogan itself emerged in the beginning of the eighties, when 1860 had two relegations from the Bundesliga down to the "Bayernliga" (the third highest league at this time, and NO, thats just the name for the regional league of Bavaria).

Sechzig, almost financally ruined by a currupt managament but still got that great fanbase, had to play against small village teams for more than ten years. It was told me that in some cases was it possible to get to away matches by suburban railway !!!!!! In these hard times the hardcore fans answered, whenever been asked why theyre still fans of such a currently unsuccessfull team, "Once a lion, always a lion".

Faithfulness is the most important thing as a loewenfan

Nowadays its established like "Mes que un club" from Barca.... It suits again to this situation of 5 years of hurt.....

Sorry if its too educational.....

First off, WELCOME!!!!

Damn, blast from the past....I cannot believe I forgot that!!!!

Two of my old teams actually played against Sechzig at the time they were relegated. I think the furthest I went was to G+P, but they did play FC Stanberg. :D

Amen, brother, amen.

And when you see guys like Michi Hofmann driving on his own with Winkler all the way up to Paderborn just to support the team you see the embodiment of that phrase.

Sorry if its too educational.....
No way, this was GREAT!!!!! Keep it coming!!

Thanks so much to each of you for sharing. Now if you could ocassionally post pics of the lovely lads on the team (I am a chick and enjoy healthy young athlete pics ) my world would be perfect.

I can't believe we made it through an entire day with no new Kenny reports - the media over there seems a bit rabid the way they have been following him around the last few days.

servus loewenboy,

I´ve been a long time not here on this board. Since Josh Wolff went back to the states I guess....

I know somebody who´s loewenfan since 1970, he told me that he cycled !!!! to an away game in Großhadern (little quarter of Munich) in the mid-eighties... how embarrassing.... especially when your bayernfan colleagues make jokes daily about "you and your club".... however he still got season tickets .....

There are a lot of people who say that only the faithful fans kept 1860 alive at this time...

What do you know about Lovin, one of your new guys.

handle: McLovin, came to sechzig because he had trouble with the owner of his old club Steaua Bukarest. He did well in the pre season matches... well in fact he played champons league last season. Its a great deal by Micky Stevic and a miracle that he plays now for 1860.

In my opinion he will be our new star defensive-midfielder controlling the attacks... we´ll see but I can´t imagine that he won´t play a good season...

okay I´ll take a look at him sunday :D

I can't wait to check the team out myself this season. I'll be there with a small group of fellow Americans.

We thought Stevic should be shot at the beginning of this thing, but I have to admit he really turned it on near the end.

But am I right in saying there will be more problems if this team does not win promotion??

It depends on how this team end this season... e.g. they achieve a place like 8-13 like in the last years I guess the best players like Rukavina, Felhi, Lovin and Cooper are going to leave us.... I´m sure that they dont want to lose their places in the national teams....

But in case they become 4th or 5th I think there´s enough reason for kickers to come to 1860 and Stevic can draw new players to better the squad quality...

Not later than 2011 we must be promoted.... or we´ll be broke....that´s predictable....

Usually during one of the breaks the team does this shirts off lactic acid test which usually draws about 3x the number of women usually at practice. It's funny because you can see the video online and it looks like a sale at Nordstroms rather than a training session.. :D

There were a few which I posted in the closed thread part 1. I actually think it's good the frenzy has died down for now. He needs the time and sets him up well for his debut. Had Lienen said he was starting him, which I think many coaches would have, I think you would see report after report.

What do you know about Lovin, one of your new guys.
W/B covered the Lovin angle. I am amazed at how stable he looks. Nothing agains the Benders, but he adds experience back there and makes Beda look like a rookie.

I know somebody who´s loewenfan since 1970, he told me that he cycled !!!! to an away game in Großhadern (little quarter of Munich) in the mid-eighties...

LOL....I know Grosshadern well. My house is just near Westpark. I can make GH in 5 mins by bike. I have family that lives just down the road in Planegg....who also played 1860 in those days.:o

There are a lot of people who say that only the faithful fans kept 1860 alive at this time...
It was tough to be a blue fan and walk the streets. Half my family are Bayern fans, so made family gatherings that much more strenuous.

We thought Stevic should be shot at the beginning of this thing, but I have to admit he really turned it on near the end.
I have not put my rifle away yet. I give him all the credit for moves made in the transfer market and HUGE kudos for the Kenny move - which, btw, I posted here about 100 times last season noting how well he could help 1860. NOW, that said, he is still being a douche-bag to Lars Bender and Michi Hofmann. Also, let's see how these guys play on the field before we put the olive branch on his head and proclaim him Caesar. For me he will earn my respect when he: 1) treats Lars better and either plays him or lets him go, 2) gives Michi Hofmann a job and announces it before the end of the season, 3) his acquisitions turn out to actually be worth something substantive on the field, 4) 1860 places higher than 8th, 5) our license is secured for next season, and 6) we finally get to see the book on how he PAID for all of the above....hopefully he did not increase our $3m operating deficit or debt.

You live in Groebenzell? I used to play for a team who played Lochhausen and Pucheim. Plays for a cops club made up of police. No one would smack talk us because they knew when they put on their uniforms they would start handing out tickets. :D

Looks like this one is a retro pic from the late 70s or 80s. My type of German Engineering...though the pictures of the ladies vying for Miss TSV that loewnboy shared back in May were very "stimulating"!

Added comment:

The 70s and 80s were dark days for 1860 as the successes were few and far between. Lots of financial irregularities and mismanagement led to obvious field repercussions.

Despite this, the fans always turned out and were loyal. The youth teams were very strong and several players from the Jugend "A" and "B" sides did well professionally. Albeit, with other clubs as TSV 1860 had neither the means financially and were often bouncing between the 2. Bundesliga Sud, Regionalliga and Oberliga. One notable acheivement was the Jugend "B" success winning the BayernischePokal in 1977.

As one with some personal experience, I can say that the Loewenfamilie was a more "real" lot than those of FCB. More working class, real football fans and I often found the female companionship much more attractive and fun then the snob, rich girls hanging around FCB's team doors.

I would love to see them return to Gruenwaldstadion and call it their own outside of just being a training ground. The neighborhood had great character and reminded one of Wrigley Field and the surrounding area in Chicago. Also, it would be more reasonable financially over the long term. They need a place of their own rather than sharing with the "Red Beast" of FCB at AllianzArena.

Just MHO . . . Woody
