View Full Version : Euro 2000 on Fox Sports World - Still Appalled After 4 Years

Was anyone as outraged as I was back in 2000 over FSW's coverage of the last few matches of Euro 2000? As I was watching the ending of the France v Portugal semi-final, and we're going to the extra period, Fox doesn't show it!!! All we get is some quicky highlights, and it's over!!!
I'm thinking, of course, that this was some momentary lapse, but no.....
They do it again, for the Netherlands v Italy semi-final, and then, my god, they do it for the final!!!
It was bad enough waiting a week after the fact for them to show the matches, but to get this "oh, here's the winning goal, goodbye!" approach was just appalling.
And I thought ESPN cutting away 2 seconds after the winning goal of the Euro 96 final (for the X-Games!!) was bad...
Please reply, I'm in a real ranting & raving kinda mood...

daCFO, I fully believe that... to me it's a crying shame that an outfit as amateurish as FSW is the main provider of footy to the USA.
I am *so* buying the PPV package...

Hey, I've moved on, but what I said certainly applies to the upcoming tournament, don't you think?

I don't get the package, but I will simply find out the results on FSW Report and maybe see a couple minutes of the FSW replay.
If you want anything that will be on PPV, get it.

I don't understand people's reactions to the original post. Am I going to buy the PPV package for Euro 2004? Sure. Am I digusted by Fox Sports World's tape-delay coverage of games that go into overtime and penalty shootouts? You bet.
The Fox corporation couldn't care less about soccer. Fox Sports World is actually a big money maker for them and cable/satellite companies: it is almost never offered as part of a basic package, and they have no competition. We shell out the big bucks, get crappy coverage, but hey, what can you do? Cancel your digital cable subscription or Dish 180 and bye bye soccer...
That's why we're stuck with this insane tape-delayed coverage. What Fox Sports World does is allocate 2-hr slots for soccer games, no matter what game it is. No big deal when it's a regular 90 min game. They fit it all in. Big BIG problem when the game goes into overtime and penalty shootout, because after 2 45-min halves and commercials at half-time, they only have 5 minutes left for a short summary of overtime and penalty shootouts.
They should allow 3-hr slots on their schedule for games that could potentially go past 90 minutes, but will never do that because it would disrupt their pre-established lineup.
That's shameful, but (a) we're stuck with them and (b) what do you expect from a corporation that brings you O'Reilly, Hannity an the likes? (Ok, cheap shot, I know).
By the way (to end a long post), watch Marseille-Valencia on Wednesday. Live at 2:30 ET, so no matter what happens, you'll see the whole thing. The 8 pm repeat though has only been given a 2-hr slot, meaning if the game's tied after 90 min, we will see nothing of OT or PK shootout.
Two big fat thumbs down for Fox Sports World.

Thank you. You got exactly what I was going for with the original post.
What makes it even more frustrating is when FSW continually blasts at you "We're America's soccer channel!", when their poor track record and amateurish presentation show you how much they really care about the sport.
(and don't get me started on Max Bretos & the rest of his motley crew...)
(ok, do) :)
For the record, in 2000, I had no option to see the matches but for the week-delayed ones on FSW (basic cable only). And believe me, it was really tough waiting an entire week, avoiding the internet & all the spanish tv stations so as to not see the results. (I didn't entirely succeed) :)

Anytime you see a game on tape delay, you get that problem.
Wait until you see a NBA game, delayed, in a 2 hour time slot. If the game goes into 2OT, you'll see the 3rd quarter in the first 30 minutes. It gives totally away the score (regulation) to those who know anything about basketball.
Wait until you see a Stanley Cup playoffs in a 2.5 hour timeslot. If the game goes into 4OT, you'll see the 3rd period in the first hour.
Wait until you see Spain x Ireland, delayed on ABC, in the 2002 World Cup. The telecast was supposed to have a half-hour pre-game show. But because the game went to penalty shootout, they cut the pre-game show to 5 minutes. Any soccer fan with a brain knew what was going on...
Games are supposed to be watched live. If you can't watch it live, at least ***RECORD*** it live. Any sensible station would edit a delayed telecast, and thus give away the score, if it goes longer than the allocated timeslot...
And what do you mean by "no option" to watch it live. If it's not available in your city, at least move to a city (e.g. L.A. or San Diego) or country (e.g. Canada or Mexico) for a month to watch it live. Work or school is absolutely no excuse to miss Euro 2000. I mean, soccer is LIFE!!!

Amazing the number of people incapable of recording TV programs.

Or, to take it step further on the inconvenience-scale, drive downtown to a soccer pub!

only cheapskates or MARRIED PEOPLE watch games on tape delay. how the hell am I supposed to justify $20 a game to follow a tournament our home team is not even playing in?
Or what about the people who simply can't afford $20 a game? they don't have the right to be a soccer fan?
oh btw da_cfo... i am waiting to see how you work in the "FSW will only show EPL next season" angle to this thread.

No, they just don't have the right to be a Euro 2004 live on their home TV fan. Plus, it's cheaper than $20/game if you get the package deal.

I can't believe ESPN doesn't show the games. I guess the world series of poker or some other shiite like that is more important. In Canada, TSN is showing every damn game LIVE.

First of all, if you're a true "soccer fan", you wouldn't gripe about putting up a few bucks to watch the best football possible after the wc, regardless if your team is in it or not.
Second, if u buy the package from setanta with 3 friends (after all, who wants to sit home and watch the Euro's alone?), it would cost you less than $45 for the package, better yet, only $1.43 per game!!!....If you think its not worth it, you can hardly call yourself a soccer fan!!
