Man pc4th you've been the man of lists recently. That's not suprsing that MLB is at the top of the web list, if only slightly, their site is by far the best and is also really accesiable to all the baseball number geeks. They've got a tremendous stat engine on there.

If Bigsoccer.com and MLSnet combine, (bigsoccer becomes mlsnet.com/forum) MLSnet.com would be in the top 1000 for sure. MLB has a message board right on its website, not a link like MLSnet. I don't know if NFL, NHL, NBA have message board directly on their site or indirectly like MLS.

Here are some more competitors:

majorleaguelacrosse.com 90,373
PBA.com (professional Bowlers Association) 10,503
nfleurope.com: 11,097
misl.net: 116,743 (major indoor soccer league)
uslsoccer.com: 43,568
LPGA.com: 9,566
nll.com: 26,163 (national lacrosse league)

This would have to be done in such a way that Bigsoccer's many many posters who don't follow MLS don't notice much of a change.

Also...

USLsoccer.com 43,558
a-league.com 110,583
usldiscussions.com 189,520
bettingadvice.com (soccer mostly) 79,406

This is an interesting point. There are plenty of really active more team specfic message boards, at least with the Sox there are, rather infamously to be accurate but because this is a defacto official MLS site I think that's probably a pretty unique situation.

And if you have trouble believing the Nielsen's you should really have trouble believing thse ratings. I was a methodology consultant for a complany that did such ratings, and also had dealings with the two or three other companies that did them. All of the methodologies are deeply flawed and can only give at best a very rough estimate of rank. In fact, if you read the fine print at the site for these ratings you realize immediately that they don't even pretend that they're accurate.

This is how they do it.

Traffic rank is determined by analyzing browser reports for millions of WebSearch Toolbar users. Obtained reports are sorted, tabulated, and analyzed to determine a given website’s traffic rank. This process renders the results reported in the Websearch Traffic Ranking screen.

How is Traffic Rank determined?
Website traffic rank is based on traffic data derived from the WebSearch Toolbar network of subscribers. It is calculated by the total amount of users (scope) and the amount of original page views.

Traffic data is based on the Internet browsing behavior of WebSearch Toolbar users, which may not be a representative sample of the global Internet population. Known biases include (but are likely not limited to) the following:

The WebSearch Toolbar works only with the Internet Explorer browser. Sites frequented mainly by users of other browsers will be undercounted. For example, the AOL/Netscape browser is not supported, which means that we collects little data from AOL users, and our traffic to aol.com is likely lower than it would be for a more representative sample.
The WebSearch Toolbar works only on Windows operating systems. Although a large majority of the Internet population currently uses Windows, traffic to any sites which are disproportionately visited by users of other operating systems will be undercounted.
In some cases traffic data may also be adversely affected by our "site" definitions. With tens of millions of hosts on the Internet, our automated procedures for determining which hosts are serving the "same" content may be incorrect and/or out-of-date. Similarly, the determinations of domains and home pages may not always be accurate. When these determinations change (as they do periodically), there may be sudden artificial changes in our traffic rankings for some sites as a consequence.
The WebSearch Toolbar turns itself off on secure pages (https:) for privacy/security reasons. Sites with more secure page views will be under-represented in our traffic stats

So it has its limitation, but overall, they are pretty accurate. It's no surprise to anyone that yahoo.com is #1 and google.com is #4.

FIFAWorldCup goes through yahoo by the way (just to give you an example).

The top 325,000 are just a bunch of good-for-nothing corporate sell-outs.

Don't lose your integrity, man.

There are quite a few advertising company sites in the top 50, to which most "visits" are presumably involuntary. If these were excluded most sites in the top 100 would get a significant boost.
