Interesting article from bbc sport, about who might be the next target for a big investor. very complimentary of spurs, and argues against the "charlton/birmingham are bigger than spurs now" school of thought:

It's true, Roman A approached Levy about us before he approached Bates about turning Chelsea into Chelski.

We do have a number of wealthy people watching us closely. Just got to hope we don't have another bad season like this year, otherwise our international brand name is going to take a permanent turn for the worse. A big investor would be superb for us, although Levy is doing a decent job of getting money in the pot and making the club affordable to a buyer.

Tottenham are considered a big club, because they bought the two Argentines in the 1970s.

A Classic. We Villa fans cling to such irrelvant and pointless details to justify our big club status aswell, it`s all good fun though.

BIG-CASH SUMMER TARGETS
Manchester United
Newcastle
Tottenham
Arsenal
Aston Villa

How did they miss Liverpool off their list? They`re the only one being bid for at the moment.

ww do indeed cling to irrelevancies. but i do think that is quite important - it got us known as a major force in south america and worldwide. similarly, the 84 uefa cup campaign was a really big deal in getting us our strong euro following, especially in the low countries.

How did they miss Liverpool off their list? They`re the only one being bid for at the moment. I'm guessing that they missed Chelsea because it has already been bought, but I think the article is really about the Thai Prime Minister who is looking to invest in Liverpool, so that category should probably have read "WHO ELSE are Big Cash Summer Targets." The article seemed to be talking mostly about Liverpool, so I don't think they intended for you to exclude them. But I must say, Spurs did come out very well in this article. It's almost saying that we're a bigger club than Chelsea, which is obviously not the case currently.

The Liverpool thing is interesting, it seems Stevie Morgan is doing a bit of what Spurs tried with the share issue but he wants more for his money. Some input and control over the team, players and staff. Not always a good thing.

I'd rather Spurs were bought by Joe Lewis directly, the ENIC owner. But football doesn't really make much of a profit unless you sell out completely. Asian markets, corporate hospitality, ppv tv channels etc.. which i don't really like, although i can see the benefits.

People who invest in football nowadays have to be stinking rich that losing a bit doesn't matter, Abramovich, or die hard fans, Morgan.

Not really sure who is best though, a die hard fan has his own blinkered views and a tycoon wants the best players to be at his club meaning old faces get booted out.

If the old face that's booted out is Pleat's, bring it on! Either that or take him round the back of the Paxton End and treat him like the barking old mutt he is. No room for sentiment when the old dog's gone rabid!

And I thought we`d been tough on Graham Taylor this time last year, at least we stopped short of suggesting that he should be shot like a rabid dog.

He ought to have been chopped up like a turnip.

Seriously though, Doug Ellis;

Taylor, Atkinson, Venglos, Gregory, Taylor again. Thats over ten years of complete (com'pleat'?) mismanagement. The millions given to crap managers, and now you've got a good one you have no money!

Spurs and Vanilla = Brothers in Arms.

Does Joe Lewis actually give a toss about football though, and especially about Spurs? From what I can make out he seems to spend most of his time sitting on a Yacht in the Carribean playing the markets. The man is extremely rich but I don't think he sees Spurs as anything other than an investment which he isn't willing to put the real funds up for.

The thing about Roman Abromovich is that he has terrible choice in players. Chelsea had a strong side before him then he shows up and buys Veron who Manyoo knew was a bust and Hernan Crespo who is beyond his prime then gives them less than a few months to mesh and when they don't finish first he's ready to fire the coach sell Veron and Crespo and try again. He's like some little kid playing a football sim and buying up all the big name players, not the ones with talent. As shameful as I feel saying it, look at Arsenal, even without Wiltord and Reyes, there big two signings they went undefeated thanks to intelligent buys and good scouting.

I frankly would rather have a manager like Wenger who has an eye for talent and a knack for bargain buys than someone 10 times a rich as Roman.

That's very true Joser, Valencia are top dog in spain despite not spending anywhere near as much over the past few years as Barcelona or Madrid, Werder Bremen ran away with the Bundesliga over Bayern Munich. The manager is more important than the chairman.

As an individual he does not have a direct interest in football as such. However Levy does, and Lewis apparently likes and trusts Levy a great deal. I'm not too certain on the specifics but I don't think he expects to make a serious profit on Tottenham, but in turn I don't think he's going to plow money into it.

Well if you believe the story that they were picked by Eriksson then that would fit. He bought both players with great success at Lazio and possible wanted to have them again. In my opinion they are both still great players.
