consistency, steps up when it is needed/expected, leads by example, not hot-tempered. then throw in some great skills.

Consistency, leadership, determination, steps up, and have the ability to make players around them play better.

adding to the consistency comment, they must be clutch players as well. They must always rise to a challenge. A great player will pick up a team if they are down one way or another.

A great player, hates to loose.
This why a coach will give a certain type of player the Captain's armaband. They're the first person for practice, and they're the last person to leave the game. They complain the least, and go up for the hardest challenges first. And as for the hating to loose part, they are their toughest critic, constantly trying to improve thier game every single day, and always leading by example.
you have 11 players like that - you may not guarantee yourself a win, but you're chances for hanging in till the last whilstle will be there.

and completeness, a pure scorer may be loved, but will never be great.

They need to go by one name. See Pele, Esubio, Zico, Socrates, Ronaldo, Totti, ZiZi, Dida, et al. =)

IMO Beckhem is good for adverising boots and football gear thats all he is known for, he might have had some fluks playing with Manchester but he didn't do any good to Madrid. I recon Madrid would have gone further in the LA liga and Champions lauge without him and now that they lost well not lost but didn't do very well he is going to Chealsea probably because the were in the semi-finals in the Champions lauge well thats what i think anyway i am sure there will be someone saying otherwise.
