IMO Beckhem is good for adverising boots and football gear thats all he is known for, he might have had some fluks playing with Manchester but he didn't do any good to Madrid. I recon Madrid would have gone further in the LA liga and Champions lauge without him and now that they lost well not lost but didn't do very well he is going to Chealsea probably because the were in the semi-finals in the Champions lauge well thats what i think anyway i am sure there will be someone saying otherwise.
i'd have to disagree to extent, sure Beckham didn't have a huge impact on Real and win a CL final, but then again it was his first season in La Liga playing among brand new teammates.

The same can be said about ManU's woeful season, a bunch of new faces playing 1st team football for the 1st time....

I wonderin what peoples thoughts are about what makes a great player, despite the position that they play.
The ability to fly.

im sorry but i have to disagree with you on that one...despite his very very very poor outing in portugal this summer, i think he is a great player, and it shows from his accomplishments..european player of the year, runner-up in world player of the year and countless medals at united...to have a great passing skill, one must have great vision, and his is out of this world..hes able to pick out players with a long ball like its nothing...although it didnt show in the past two major tournaments he has tremendous amounts of energy on the pitch, and his work rate is very high...it really didnt show this year at all, but in qualifying for the world cup in 2002, he was playing some great football...and of course he is one the best dead-ball maestros (expects in the pk dept.) in the game..no teams ever want to foul someone around the 18' cause they know he'll make them play..i know he is an overrated player but he is a great player..

to be a great player, one must show cool composure when the pressure is on, a great work ethic, one who can make every player on the pitch better and of course skill...

A great player doesn't have to be spectacular or flash like (the fake) Ronaldo, he just has to be consistant, and not make errors. Look at players like Vieria or Keane, both rated as two of the best centre midfielders in the country, because they are so consisitant and they don't give the ball away, Gerrard's major weakness. Also Beckham was brilliant for Madrid in the first half of the season, personal troubles have obviously bothered him too much, and his fitness seems to have been a problem, being that he was the second most fouled player in La Liga.

WHat makes a great player? You could detail every little thing but what makes a great player is simple, a fantastic knowledge, perception and understanding of the game, coupled with great technical ability in all areas. Look at all the greatest legends of the game, what have they in common? All total masters of the ball, with superb footballing intelligence. These things combine to make a great pklayer but only if he wants to be great, which accounts for all the attitude/mental things too.

does being left footed and having good pace and ball skills,as well as shooting and crossing abilities have its advantages?

They need to go by one name. See Pele, Esubio, Zico, Socrates, Ronaldo, Totti, ZiZi, Dida, et al. =)

True, as I personally think Ronaldinho is the best player in the world at this very moment. Although I don't think I'm old enough to have seen much of a few of them, ie. Esubio, Zico, Socrates, with the exeption of Pele, who is one I would consider the biggest footballing legend ever. With the exeption of MAYBE Bobby Moore over here in London, UK. :) I'd just like to add that Ronaldo has 5 names  (joke)

Being able to think several plays ahead and having good natural talent. i.e. a player who doesn't need to think about anything or process information while playing. A great player doesn't need to consider angles, positioning, touch, where to strike the ball, power, etc - it all comes naturally, which allows them to focus on the end product. This makes them "quicker" than other players which adds to their advantage.

Endurance. Being able to keep running for a long time and never giving up. Someone who works hard and gives their best. Also reading plays and being positioned so your at an advantage on the field is good, also. Then of course there is the basics...shooting,passing,dribbling,heading, but of course, you hear that all the time. :)

attitude...look at Cassano...without his attitude, he can be the greatest player in the world.

Doesn't make a great player in itself, but the hallmark of one is class first touch under pressure.
