Heads up for anyone planning to go over there. I'm sure things will be fine with heightened security the past few months, especially since Madrid. Also I doubt there will be much of a US presence to begin with, so it would make it hard to target US citizens. Still, please do be careful everyone (from all countries) who is planning to make the journey--and know that I'm massively jealous of all of you. ;)

Did they put foward a travel advisory for the World Cup?

I read the complete warning on the State Deparment's website and the warning has very little to do with terrorism. The advisory is mostly about potential hooliganism, and the limited ticket availblilty. IE don't go to Portugal without tickets, and do not buy from scalpers.

Are the State Department really worried about scalpers and some sunburnt football fans throwing deck chairs at each other across a town square? Then where was the warning when I went to Sheffield last week?
Seriously though - should be a great time for all heading down. Certainly have to be careful anywhere you travel nowadays, but I'm not too concerned about being there as an American. I've got tickets and a rental car - now I just need places to stay :-/

I'd be more concerned if I were going to the Olympics.

I think you've just answered your own question!
I wish I had a car. We're doing a mix of train and cab (ohmygoditsgonnabecrazyinAveiro).
