View Full Version : October Pre and Post Game

Made this a new thread.

I would recommend that festivities for the October game take place in the District and not out in VA. For us people in MD (and even people in DC without cars), getting to VA on weeknights is near impossible. Plus, most people, when they stay, want to stay in the District. Having the pregame festivities the night before and the day of at a bar in DC, I think, would maximize the amount of people that would come out.

That's an awesome point. My plan is to ensure there will be specials for those people in red white and blue. Preferably on a metro line so there will be no driving at all. I can rock that out in Va and can call Momo's and The Pour House. Any other places you would suggest?

I think the post game place needs to be within walking distance to the hotel we set up (it's a weeknight and Metro closes at midnight so people need to be able to stumble back). Also, are locals going to go out afterword (some will but most people have work the next day) so I'd think about post game place being more for the out of towners. DC is nice and all (I live in Adams Morgan) but weeknight hotel rates are much higher than across the river. Also, I just looked at the DC Convention Bureau (http://www.dcconvention.com/events.aspx) site and there's some art and antiques thing around this game date (10,000 people) so downtown hotels could be booked.

In your opinion what is the best bar that we can meet at on game day, and then go from there to the stadium? Are there any that we can march from?

I'm not getting the whole meet at a bar thing, DC soccer supporters are a tailgating people as there are no large and convenient bars close to RFK. (We served almost 800 people for the US-Cuba game tgate, there's no bar on Cap Hill with that kind of capacity that I can think of). The other issue is marching through the residential neighborhood surrounding RFK from any of the bars at Cap S/Eastern Market area, when the DC supporters clubs did their stadium march in the Spring we had to get a parade permit (the folks who live up there will call the cops if there's a couple hundred people yelling and clogging up their streets and sidewalks without a permit). If we can get a cheap hotel deal out on the Orange line somewhere then maybe we could set up a meet up for lunch at the "night before place" and then people leave from there on the train and march down from stadium stop to the tgate. Or, people can just march in from the tgate to the stadium.

Why would it be so bad if we all met somewhere way before the game and then made our way to the SE tailgate? Wouldn't that be an awesome ride on the metro even( if we can't find a bar to march from? ) Nobody is trying cut out the tailgate Kim. Some of us take the whole day off for the games and have people coming from out of the state and we want to know where we can chill at all day. Just sayin at Columbus all of AO met at this bar and learned new songs and drank and had an awesome vibe! I met people from all over the country. From there we marched to the tailgate singing more than " Shit on those Bastards Below, and When the Yanks go marchinging in. " And how much does a marching permit really cost? Maybe i'm a little off base here....Justin seems to think this might be an ok idea. Do you an opinion though on what bars MIGHT work out? Where did the march for the DCU opener start. And how did it go?

The march for just about every game starts in Lot 8 at the tailgates. The march that K was referring to was the "Keep United in DC" march that started in Lincoln Park (IIRC) and went to Lot 8. They definitely needed a permit for this one. DC is very strict about this, so it won't be a "march" from the bars to the stadium. What I was saying is that hours before the tailgate, if people wanted to meet at a bar and then metro to the stadium to march from Stadium/Armory to the tailgate, that would be cool. It would, admittedly, be a logistical nightmare, but if pulled off, to have a hundred or so people jamming the metro for a couple stops to the stadium singing and cheering in the cars would be a sight to see.

And as I said above, this could be done (provided Metro doesn't have a meltdown that day, wouldn't that be fun!). There are numerous hotels in the Rosslyn/Court House corridor (as well as bars, Kitty's is pretty small so I think if you had a couple hundred people they'd need to stretch out amongst maybe Kitty's, Summers, Irish 4 Courts, etc.) You could still say, meet on the metro platform of Court House at X time and go from there to RFK. And then on the return, use those bars for post game (and yeah, VA is a problem for the DC/MD folks but I ask again won't most locals head home after game to go to work on Thursday?) I will probably be at RFK from early am so I'll be ready to head home by kick off!

As someone who lives in MD and works in DC, VA would be a big problem for me for that very reason. If gametime is at 7pm, that would leave time for people to stop by a watering hole in DC on their way home. Having something in VA would ensure that only VA people go, in my opinion. I know a ton of people who live in MD with me that would go to a bar in DC after the game and then stay a couple hours and catch the last metro out of town, but there's no chance they would go to VA.

Well then for ease we should probably hit one of the Eastern Market area places (Pour House or 8th St bars). These are the last train times so we need to make sure people know:

Last Trains

Franconia-Springfield - 11:53 PM
Largo Town Center - 12:17 AM
New Carrollton - 12:17 AM
Vienna/Fairfax-GMU - 11:53 PM

You think game would be at 7? I'm not sure (could be at 8, ESPN scheduling can be weird). The big thing is to not promise some bar hundreds of people are showing up after the game (don't give them any number as we have no idea). In this economy you shouldn't have to oversell (and it's not like there will be Nats fans clogging places up).

It could be at 8pm, I was just throwing 7pm out as a time for the sake of example...although I think other midweek games have been at 7pm, so it's entirely possible.

As for the Nats, their season will be over at that point, so we won't have to worry about their 47 fans taking over a bar ;)

I am currently setting up a Pre-Match Party and a Post-Match Party in Northern Virginia (Spanning from Kitty's to Union Jack's to Four Courts to Summers) as that is where I know bartenders and bar owners that will be willing to provide a spot for us to hang and hopefully some beer specials for those wearing Red White and Blue.

If y'all want to join us in Virginia, that would be awesome! If not, once I finalize plans, let me know which of your local bars to call and with whom I could speak to share what Arlington is providing and if they would want to extend the same courtesy to U.S. supporter patrons.

PLEASE don't think that I am neglecting your neck of the woods.

As for the march, I agree with K. Walking from D.C. bars with a large contingent of fans who are intoxicated and loud through family neighborhoods isn't the best of ideas on a weekday. It would be rude to the residents and it might become a legal issue and I don't have bail money.

I really think that we should either:

1) Meet at the Stadium-Armory Metro (after pregame parties) and march in, singing all the while.
2) Meet at the Tailgate and on the way into the stadium for the match, march around the stadium before heading in, singing all the while.

Definitely consider Molly Malone's as an alternative bar once you finalize plans. I'm sure they'll be able to work with you.

You quoted this out of context BTW. The whole paragraph talks about how we should have a place to party before going to the stadium.

Ok, ok! I saw my name and thought I'd have a little fun. That's all.

Back to the mission at hand.

Who has a bar to hit up for pregame on the Red Line?

Is Eastern Market a viable metro stop for Molly Malone's?

Molly Malone's is 2 blocks from the Eastern Market metro. I mentioned some Red Line bar possibilities in the other thread.

There has been a lull in activity since the Mexico game. Is everybody OK? This game is looking more and more important.
