View Full Version : Not So Pre-Season Friendlies (Barca and Our Business Strategy)

I was just looking over our fixtures list and finally came around to the realisation that we are playing a supposed pre-season friendly against Barca a mere four days after our first proper league match against Rovers. This seems odd as I cannot seem to recall another time in recent history we have willingly clogged the first week of the season with unnecessary ties, adding--albeit a smaller one--further risk of injury or fatigue just three days prior to our second tricky league match against Wolves. Perhaps I am forgetting something, though.

Now, I am very much aware of the business strategy involved with this last minute addition. Although, given the extremely lukewarm reception we received in South Africa after our performance and unfortunate team selection (which I by no means fault Hughes for), it may not meet Cook's high hopes. I suspect we will not field our prominent side in the clash, as that would mean the majority of our starting squad would play around 270 minutes in a matter of a week. This would be taxing even with only very light training sessions between. This leads me to conclude Sparky will likely name a squad of bench and reserve players, as not even I, a less than full-hearted supporter of him, believes he so inept as to play fringe players for either of our first two league ties in order to save them for a meaningless marketing game. We would lose far more business wise in falling or drawing in our first two Premiership meetings than losing to Barca.

This begs the question: why? Are the owners or the admin office going to attempt to influence Hughes into choosing a side not in our best performance interest? Or will we logically play a diminished side, which seems not to fulfill the most basic functions of a friendly (those being fitness improvement, form assessment, and, in modern times, a positive marketing outcome). Perhaps I am looking at this with too focused a mindset and am missing another helpful purpose of the match.

What do you lads think?

TBH I don't know what to think. It probably wouldn't be surprised if we didn't field our strong side, but being that its just for a friendly, I really don't care. It'll be a good run out for those that will play (probably a few of our bench warmers + youth/reserve players) against Barca's strong side (probably just for a half). I'm not going to put much thought into it and just enjoy the match.

I was a little confused when I realised the friendly was arranged after the start of the season.

Thinking about it further... There is a full Premier League midweek fixture programme for all teams, barring those playing in Europe. Because of this our game with Everton was postponed and has now been replaced with the Barcelona game.

Although there is always the possibilty that players may get injured, this could also happen during any normal training session. I feel that one of the biggest problems facing us in the 1st half of the season is the need to intergrate the new players and find our best formation for upcoming league & cup games as quickly as possible. It may actually be helpful to MH and the squad.

I am looking forward to the game, and if it wasn't for other commitments I would have loved to fly out, spend a couple of days in Barcelona and watch the game live. As it is I'll more likely to be scouring the net, and hoping to find a decent stream.

It's to get ALL players up to speed as quickly as possible, an extra 'friendly' if you will. If anyone is underdone, they will get a game. (Bojinov, Tevez etc etc). I don't think we will play all that many first-teamers.

Great views all.

I considered the potential for the extra run out for all players but was not terribly convinced of it's benefits given the costs and risk. As far as formation assessment is concerned, as I said in my post, it is not of particular use unless you plan to play the majority of your first-choice squad, at least in my mind.

Although I am not risk averse by any means, my occupation entails quite a bit of risk mitigation and management so I have a tendency to analyse nearly everything for risk, reward, cost, and benefit. Given that, I would probably be best served taking up MLSN00b's healthy "not important, so lay back and enjoy" mentality for things outside of it. Still, always interesting to get some discussion going.

Speaking of which, anyone secretly enjoying Taggart's obvious nervous and jealous rants as of late? I try not to take pleasure in other people's anxiety but it's been admittedly hard not to with his seemingly impending implosion.

This is a strategic friendly to improve our ties with Barcelona. I read somewhere but forget that this friendly has some importance and its usually only top teams who play Barca - or something - so could be seen as a sign of our ascent in world football.

I think any chance you get to play the champions of Europe it is a good thing. Plus maybe they proposed it since their league doesnt start until last week of Aug.

Also I noticed this tends to happen to some bundesliga teams as well, their season starts a bit early but some of the teams still arrange friendlies in between league games in August.

You folks remember when COMS first opened Barcelona came for a friendly and Ronaldinho was greeted with a hero's welcome because he snubbed manure that summer, ahh fun times!

Yeah, was at the game and if I remember correctly it was also the official opening of the COMS, and we beat them 2-1 :)
