This thread isn't meant to be provocative, really, I just want to know!

What is the object of splitting the SPL fixtures towards the end of the season - so that the teams in the top and lower halves only play one another for the rest of the season - meant to achieve?

Does it achieve whatever it is that it sets out to do?

As far as I know, there are 3 reasons for the split.

1) The split came in when the SPL moved to a 12 team league. It was thought that 44 games a season was too much, the split reduces the number to 38.

2) To intenify end-of season. Teams going for title/relegation play other teams going for title/relegation. Also play teams closer to their level.

3) Make another area of excitement. Make getting into the 'top 6' something to aim for and give mid-table teams something to play for.
