What kind of atmosphere do you think Vancouver will bring to MLS?
My question stems from this mornings Houston v. Toronto game. I got a tell ya those guys get loud, they are pretty much singing the whole game through, very passionate fans.
I just wanted to know if you think Vancouver could match Toronto's intensity and love for the game.

I'd like to ask where that intensity and love for the game was back when they had a team called the Lynx playing in USL-1?

Vancouver fans are a lot more knowledgeable about the game. I'm guessing it will be a bit more sophisticated than the bandwagon jumpers in Toronto. Probably equal to Seattle in fan support and intensity.

That was nothing. It was a dry game and things were rather subdued. Waiting until next Wednesday when we play Puerto Rico.
Oh and I imagine Vancouver will be pretty good once they get into a bigger stadium.

This better be good Black13, because if it isn't.......then you are simply someone who subscribes to the guy who blows his trumpet the loudest is therefore the leader of the band theory on life.
I'll be interested to see what this game experience is, you're bringing to Vancouver.

• Went to Sounder v Fire this week
• Season ticket holder for Whitecaps
Therefore, I believe I offer a reasonable perspective. Vancouver will equal Seattle in terms of atmosphere. Of that, I am convinced. And the atmosphere in Seattle is amazing.
However, Vancouver will have one serious limitation that Seattle does not: the stadium. Qwest is a much better stadium and offers more flexibility on the seating configuration. When BC Place is finished, it will be remarkable, however the capacity of the top deck will be all or nothing. Once the internal roof comes down, the stadium will be capped at a lower number than Qwest because BC place is smaller than Qwest. So, the Whitecaps will probably only have about 20-24K per game if one believes the plans that have been posted to date. There is so much pent up demand for soccer in Vancouver, it's ridiculous. This franchise here will be amazing. They do things right. They will market themselves well, they will present the game well, they will create a buzz in town, and there will be a lot of local pride in the team. This will be very good for MLS.

i totally agree with you-- i think i heard that the lower bowl might be adjusted-- if needed-- to just under 26 000--that success will present a + problem about the upper bowl-- i guess they could tarp off the end zones and just open the mid-sections on each side-- not sure what that will be like, but ti would be a nice problem to solve :D

why would you tarp off the places behind the net thats where traditionally the supporters groups stand and it the best place to see the game imo. and i heard they might add terraces for the southsiders but thats just a rumor.

whatever works to create a + atmosphere is fine by me-- apparently there will be a curtain to close off the upper bowl when the roofs are retracted during nice weather games-- how this would be configured to allow end zones for fans and supporter groups would be interesting to see, but its certainly possible-- i agree that the end zones, where usually the supporters groups like to hang out, are often the best places to watch a game

Do you guys still use that Chelsea knock off anthem? Don't get me wrong, it sounds pretty good.

The Caps still play it over the PA, but it's not really part of the Southsiders repertoire. Our "club anthem," if you want to call it that, is "Boundary Road," and has been since we formed in 1999.
Worth noting the Portland Timbers also use "Green is the Colour..."

They still play the one heard in the clip. Back in 2001 they hired those twins "the proclaimers" to re-record the song and sing it on opening day. Unfortunately both versions were played constantly over the loudspeakers. During warmup, when the players came out on the pitch before the match, after goals, at halftime and after the final whistle. Some real idiots were running the show back then and it was over saturation.
They've toned it down now.
By the way, that 70's version was recorded by the players in 1977 I believe, and released as a single in 1978. (I'd have to dig out my old 45 to confirm). Or it could have been recorded by the 1978 team) either way the cover featured the players in their old maple leaf soccer ball logo uniforms.

Here's a few of us doing Boundary Road during an away match to Seattle last year. Just a simple verse playing off of "Country Roads" by John Denver...
The verse is only heard once on the clip, but we actually repeat it a second time.
