Am I correct that the Carling Cup is the same tournament formerly known as the Worth(ington)less Cup?

Yes, it is the Football League Cup - now named after whoever pays to sponsor it.

Previous names include - "Milk" and "Rumbelows".

It's not that worthless anymore; non-Chelsea, Man U type teams take it seriously, they want a place in Europe. Even some Premiership teams take their A team in the Carling Cup tie, especially in the late rounds.

It wasn't worthless a couple of years ago, when Liverpool made it part of their treble.

It seems to only be devalued in years that one of the big clubs doesn't contest the final.

Not quite right there mate - Chels have fielded full strength teams for a few years now.
Ranieri said from day one that he wanted to win it.
Vialli even put out strong sides.
