Cheers GPK. But does Setanta mean ESPN? I thought they bought the rights after Setanta went under
ESPN is England or UK only. Setanta US is still alive.
"New York, July 1, 2009 In response to some level of customer confusion following the announcement on June 23rd that sports broadcaster, Setanta Sports, is no longer trading in Great Britain, Setanta Sports USA today moved to clarify that it is business as usual in America.
Setanta Sports US is part of the Setanta Sports International group of companies which also includes the Setanta Sports Canada, Setanta Sports Australia, and Setanta Transmissions, which provides broadcast facilities to all Setanta International channels. None of these businesses has been affected by the closure of the British operation.
The acquisition of broadcast rights for Setanta Sports US and the other international businesses has always been entirely separate to the rights that were acquired for Setanta Sports in Britain. Accordingly there has been no change to the premium live sports content schedule and broadcasts which includes the upcoming season of the Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, Coca-Cola Championship and Heineken European Cup, amongst other top-notch programming.
There has been no change to the Setanta Sports US live and exclusive sports content schedule, commented Roger Hall, Managing Director, Setanta Sports International. Its business as usual and we look forward to the start of the new soccer season as well as providing our partners and subscribers with any additional information during the coming weeks.

Just in England, Setanta US says it is unaffected, and it is reported they make a small profit, some links in News thread a couple weeks back
edit: or just look above thanks GPk

Seriously you want to see Tommy Smyth doing a delayed Chelsea game so they can show the 666th replay of celebtity texas hold-em and hairy guys throwing kegs....
Though I do understand, there are those who have access issues to Setanta, but I'll happily pony up my money for all the football and a fair bit of Chelsea TV, not to mention puppets, if they can only get rid of that ridiculous Pat charachter though...but me really likes the Gaelic football too though I have not a clue wtf is going on

I said it a few weeks ago and I'll say it again: If ESPN had a major financial stake in soccer, the quality of the coverage would increase big time. It's happening already. Most ESPN personalities are now all of sudden big soccer fans. Coincidence, or is it because they've got an interest in the increased popularity of the game?

Hopefully I'll be able to get a second job soon so I can get Setanta and stop streaming games.

I think there is some merit in that point, however even if the quality of the coverage would increase big time,, it would still likely suck :p :D and involve too many damn Americans and American style of too much talking announcing, and squarepegs from baseball etc. (you ever see the Boston Utd. skits on Soccer AM)
Seriously, I would not see them showing as many matches as Setanta, as many non top 4 teams, and especially as many from the Championship, Holland and Russia etc. and likely no Chelsea TV:eek:, and a chance of packages and ppv's that would cost moree than Setanta in the end so though not perfect I hope for no worse than the status quo for a good while

I've been watching ESPN daily for years. There is a soccer story on Sportscenter, PTI, Around the Horn, that new show with Cowherd and ESPNEWS every day. That has never happened before. This has been going on since before the Confeds Cup even. And guess what? ESPN has also the Euros and USMNT WCQ matches so they'll want to keep soccer buzz going all of the time. I know the World Cup is next summer and sports is pretty slow right now, but there has never been this much soccer coverage on ESPN before. I can only assume that they low-balled the Champions League bidding in order to make room for domestic football... which is a good idea IMO. Champions League will create passing interest (as it has does with many of my friends) while weekly domestic football creates brand loyalty.

ESPN have treated football [soccer] like shit for years - ESPN are anti-soccer. Tommy Smyth proves it. Fcuck ESPN - Fcuck Tommy Smyth. In global terms ESPN only deal in minority fringe sports anyways . . .like baseball and NFL - although basketball IS a global sport, it is as dull as shit and would be much more interesting if there was some actual physical contact now and then. Hey maybe basketball is just a freak show after all. . .
ESPN is no longer anti soccer folks. Get over it.

GPK is right. They have done an about face on the game totally. Take it from an unemployed 22 year-old who watches hours of ESPN everyday :)

When I used to get ESPN The Mag (when it was 25c an issue and still overpriced) it was noticeable how much football coverage was increasing. Subtle things like the occasional picture highlight and published letter and less subtle like full articles and a football section at the back. This was a couple of years back but DC is bang on, there is so much more creeping in, even the Bottom Line shows Premiership results on Saturday night!!
With the money they've splashed in the UK, expect the US marketing to ratchet up. The US MNT's recent performance in the Confed Cup only serves to fuel the flames.
As for Cowherd. Well I listen to him most mornings and when they got dumped by Brazil he was scathing. Then I saw him on his new show (boy does he have a face for radio!!) and now he says he's a fan and would watch the Haiti game. In short, for sports rationale, I don't pay much attention to him but he's better than the horrible local AM sports radio I get from SD.
What I do pay attention to is people at work who more and more chat about football and have even started watching FSC. It started with the hockey fans but now 4 or 5 more in the last year are watching Champions League (out of an office of 30 this is a ton!).
I've been in the US for 7.5 years and at no time has it been so easy to find footy related coverage than right now. Expect this to get better for us, especially if the US do well in SA. Even if not I suspect the groundswell will continue to grow.

I ONLY watch ESPN for live games...I can't watch any show with one of their talking heads spouting off nonsense about any sport. ESPN is shit, their "analysts" are shit and their magazine is shittier.
I seriously question the taste of someone who can watch ATH or PTI, especially someone who's taste is good enough to support Chelsea!

You know my stance on ESPN and how it's contributing to the ruination of sports. Too many highlights, not enough substance. Selfish behaviour of athletes, while not new, is made worse with the promise of being a highlight reel, rather than a help to the team.
Cornerbacks going for a pick or runback instead of a game ending knock/kneel down springs to mind.
I can't even watch Sportscenter these days and even Baseball Tonight is not what it was.
ESPN still has a major say in the success of football in this country whether we like it or not. If it's a necessary evil so be it, but I'd rather have footy on ESPN, than on some PPV station I can't even access!
And like I said 25 cents was overpriced :)

But my fear is the currently, football is not totally highlight centric (Nani being the exception). Even Ronaldo, for all his douchiness, still plays the game to win, not for a highlight.
If we get to a point where a fullback is consistently going to the box and not tracking back, letting off their defensive duties, is going to drive me nuts.
And don't get me started on the PK stutter step, it's an illegal move/play according to the rules.
