Well, this is so much harder than the SP/Ministry one.

Ok... I'm going to start off by eliminating Cabaret Voltaire. They don't epitomize industrial the way the other three do.

I know a lot of people would go for Throbbing Gristle right away... but I lean more toward the SPK and Einsturzende Neubauten.

They both have connections to insanity... and they have those pure rackets.

You can listen to SPK and hear the influences that they had... I can hear the influences in Front 242's music.

But they were all so influential.

Well... SPK got caught up in the whole 80s thing and released some real junk that was kind of poppy... and EN had some slower, melodic stuff.

Bah... EN.

I had to vote for TB/PTV. Without Genesis P. Orridge, would there have ever been "Industrial?" I don't think so.

Einsturzende Neubauten. I saw them Friday night, and they knocked the whole place on it's collective ass.

A friend of mine was in a band in DC in about '87 or '88, and they were the warm up act for Neubaten at the 9:30 Club. Somehow Blixa didn't have his guitar, so he asked by buddy Alex if he could borrow his. Of course, Alex was like, dude, sure, that would be awesome.

Then during the show, Alex watched in horror as Blixa proceeded to abuse his guitar with great impunity. :)

Blixa is still with them, and they were brilliant. Anyone that's even curious about them should go see them while they're on tour. Blixa said that this would be their last time in the States, because they can't afford to tour the US anymore. They're also burning CDs of the show and selling them immediately afterward.
