I voted for Ministry. I don't think I ever quite looked at music the same after hearing "Just One Fix" for the first time.

Icons of industrial music
Well, this is the clincher... Icons of industrial music. Because you wrote that, I had to go with Skinny Puppy.
In 1983, Skinny Puppy was already releasing industrial.
Ministry was releasing 80s pop music... songs like "Work for Love" and "Effigy" and "I wanted to tell her." I mean, half the tracks had saxophone in them.
I can't forget that. No matter how hard they got later, that's how they started. They sold out first, too. I remember they shot an Old Style commercial at Medusa's (teen dance club in Chicago) and used (I believe) "Everyday is Halloween" or maybe "All Day."
I think Ministry probably had better songs in the long run... "Thieves" was always a favorite of mine... but as "Icons of Industrial Music" it's got to be Skinny Puppy.
Of course Einsturzende Neubauten would beat Skinny Puppy. True pioneers.

I'll start another poll for industrial pioneers. :)

I, too, had to go with Skinny Puppy.
On a side note, I'm finding it hard to get an industrial fix around here - in Chicago, of all places, which is/was the genre's Mecca.

It seems that industrial has been eclipsed by hip-hop. Not that that is in and of itself a bad thing. I like bass-heavey music that sounds great loud, especially driving through suburban neighborhoods. Stigmata, Human Disease or Shut Up all sound great at high volume as long as the subwoofer is cranking. :)

Definitely "was."
Nothing's really coming out of Chicago any more these days.
Usually, if it's industrial and in Chicago, Scary Lady Sarah has her hand in it. Check out the web site for American Gothic Productions at
http://www.americangothicprod.com/
She's more into goth, obviously, but she's the one that put together the VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Haujobb show a couple years ago at Park West... and her husband is a Nottingham Forest supporter!
Aftermath is gone... everything's gone. A few other special nights at different mainstream clubs have come and gone.
In truth, even Milwaukee has a better scene than we do now.
You just have to be vigilant. Things happen on occasion.
Neo is probably your best bet these days, really.

Goddamn, Iceblink. I can't believe you brought up Aftermath...that is too funny.
I voted for Ministry...and not out of my deep sense of Chicago loyalty. The first time I heard "Land of Rape and Honey", it was like I'd found something I didn't know I needed before.
"Work For Love", and "All Day" are completely indefensible, but "Everyday is Halloween" was like the weirdo national anthem.

I voted for Skinny Puppy even though, it was Ministry that got me into industrial music. I when I first heard Stigmata I was into punk, but the punk scene was being killed by straight edge and crossover metal. Luckily Rodney Bingenheimer turned me (and a whole bunch of other bored punkers) onto Ministry. But the sad fact is that Ministry only put out 3 records that I would consider industrial - Twitch - Land of Rape and Honey (classic) - A Mind is a Terrible thing to Taste. Even though the Jesus Built My Hotrod was great, I wouldn't consider it Industrial - everything after that was crap. But, Skinny Puppy has consistently put out great music until the end. The Process was a little on the metal side, as was Rabbies, but I would still consider it industrial.
I'm sorry to hear that the Chicago scene is kind of dead. Here in LA we have Das Bunker which usually has some great bands playing there. This Friday they have CombiChrist - a side project of Icon of Coil, and next month Terrorfakt are playing. There's also bunch of clubs that play Industrial.

Ministry rules. As do the various Ministry side projects- RevCo, Lard, PTP, 1000 Homo DJs, Acid Horse, etc. I saw them live at Roseland on the Filth Pig tour and they were brilliant.
I never really got into Skinny Puppy, but back when I was into the whole Goth/Industrial scene, they were very popular with that crowd.

Ministry side project that barely anyone knows about... Egg Hunt!
with Ian McKay of Minor Threat!
Released two songs total... "Me and You" and "We All Fall Down"
Ok... tell me you've heard of that?
BTW... anyone else besides me own a copy of NIN's Halo 00, the "Suck" bootleg, along with the cover of "Supernaut" by 1000 Homo DJs?

I thought the Ian MacKaye-Ministry thing was Pailhead, the "I Will Refuse" single. Brilliant song.

Yeah, MacKaye... I always misspell that. Well, they did do some stuff as Pailhead... and, to be honest, I am a little freaked out. I've thought it was Jourgensen/MacKaye for almost 20 years on Egg Hunt, but it looks like I was wrong!
I could swear he had something to do with it though. Perhaps it was just as producer or something. I looked some stuff up, and it looks like it was just two Minor Threat people... Ian and Jeff Nelson.
Weird!!!!!

Pailhead was a cool side project.
Saw MacKaye singing with the Rollins Band last year when Rollins was touring and doing all their Black Flag stuff to support the West Mephis Three. Keith Morris sang a few tracks prior to Henry coming on stage to perform most of the concert. MacKaye came out to sing with Henry near the end of the show.
