Well it looks like Flamini is tired of playing FullBack so he may beg his way back into Wenger's good graces. Looks like the grass aint greener in Milan....

"AC Milan star Mathieu Flamini has warned his club that they will be making him unhappy if he is forced to play at full-back again next season...
The 25-year-old, who has been linked with a return to former club Arsenal, has therefore stated that he does not want to play in defence in 2009/10.
"I don't want to play as a full-back, I am a midfielder," he told Sky Sport 24
Flamini + €20 million for Ade sure is tempting.

Are you kidding me? IF it were Flamini+20m for Adebayor (which would never happen), then it's a no brainer. We'd get back a player that worked incredibly well in our system AND 20m, with which we could easily buy an adebayor replacement....preferably someone who will actually DO something on the pitch.

A random top10 'must haves' for speculative tabloid jive
1. 'Is tipped'
2. 'it's been rumoured'
3. 'Sources close to the club'
4. 'has been linked'
5. 'it is understood'
6. 'I understand'
7. 'snub' and/or 'snubbed'
8. 'chasing'
9. 'will issue' and/or 'has issued "come and get me plea"'
10. 'not for sale' and/or 'club issue 'hands off' warning'
The Rule
=======
The exception to any of 1. to 10 being used in a completely fictitious story is No.1; 'Is Tipped' should really only be used if a quote from the manager is being regurgitated. Therefore, if Ferguson were to come out with "We wouldn't sell them a virus", the story headline could use the wording "Ronaldo Tipped to Stay"
Any other use of the above phrases can be used without a single shred of factual evidence one way or another and can be used to stir up stories that like a good Swie Flu virus can then propagate through the sewage system of Newsnow's servers and web code to proliferate as many similar stories as humanely possible with 24 hours.
If the author wants to really make himself look lazy, the use of 'it's been rumoured' is imparitive, this will impart the subliminal suggestion to the reader the the worthless junior hack pumping this sh1t out has done no more research than yourself and has just been snuffling his trout through the wonderment of the newsnow stories.
'Sources close to the club' can of course be anyone, due to the old 'protect your sources' gag, this could be the manager himself or just some p1ssed up tw@t you did coke with last Friday in the mens in a pub down Dean St.
'Is it understood' and 'I understand' are musts to use, but it's important to remember the difference between them. 'I understand' puts you, the talentless tw@t writing the story, directly in the frame whereas, 'it is understood' is very close to 'sources close to / inside the club' is far better, and again completely distances yourself from having to be factually correct on any level.
'Snub' is a great one to use, and this will rile the fans who are believing this sh1t. 'Van Persie has 'snubbed' a new contract offer' ... why what a bast@rd, how dare he 'snub' us. Of course, the existance of Narnia can be more realistic than your story, so don't worry too much about it.

I really hope we sign a DM by the beginning of the season. If we can also sell Ade for a good sum of money and buy a better replacement, it would be a perfect summer.

Agreed. If I had this option last year, I would have given away Adebayor and kept Flamini, but I tend to think once a player leaves, he's gone. Even when they come back they wont play as well as they would have had they stayed there in the first place. Recent examples Sheva, Robbie Keane...

If we can get Matuidi cheap, sell Senderos/Traore/Eboue - we should try and snatch VdV on the cheap. It could end up as a very shrewd way to preempt the deluge of injuries (not to mention having sylvie vdv in the crowd will ensure our game is always a priority for broadcasters).

Word - it's a retarded move. We're overrating Flamini here - he did play well in 07/08, but I'll put that down to the "contract year performance" which is quite common in the NBA. You can't just look at one season when evaluating a player - it's rather telling that he can't break into Milan's midfield, and he wasn't very good for us other than 07/08. And besides, Milan aren't going to offer us 20 million + Flamini = it'll be more like 10 + Flamini, and Flamini isn't worth 15 million.

I am intrigued by this idea - but if everyone's healthy, where would VdV play? Would he even agree to come in a World Cup year?

That's the point. What are the chances of us having everyone healthy at the same time? If everyone were healthy, then the more competition, the better. Buying him would be a pure luxury, but if we end up with some spare cash after getting a DM, we should look into it.
Just about every top team that goes for him won't guarantee him a starting spot, but we probably have the most legitimacy when it comes to players playing if they deserve it.

And more than any other team, we have a log jam at the tricky, technically-gifted-attacking-midfielder position. We have Fabregas, Nasri, Rosicky, Arshavin, who are trying to fit into three spots, plus trying to accomodate the likes of Walcott and Vela and Eboue (selling Eboue is a mistake, unless we can get 10+ for him).
Something I've been wondering about - what do you guys think about Eboue as the new DM if we don't get Matuidi? He's good on the ball, he can tackle pretty well, doesn't read the game poorly - only his positioning and attitude need work, and his attitude was much better towards the end of last season.

Finally somebody said it. Think about it, he's decent in defence, likes to go forward once in while and has bags of energy which is required in this position.

Keeping Eboue would be great, but we have to see if he backtracked on that idea to move on for more playing time.
Our biggest obstacle going into this season (other than some freak occurence leaving us with no GKs for example), would be losing our midfield to injury. It would be a miracle if we got through the first international break with 90% of our team still intact. If there is extra cash lying around (and it looks like there might be since Matuidi should be relatively cheap) we should continue to reinforce the midfield.

Didn't we try this for a couple games fairly early last season? And wasn't there a huge hue and cry from the fans about the idiocy of the move, despite the fact that I seem to recall that he didn't do that badly?

he wasn't bad at all at CM, but I am not sure if he would want to play it in a world cup year

eh, he wasn't bad, but he wasn't great either. He's not the answer for that position, certainly not better than Denilson or Song. As we go into this season looking to be title contenders, we need to do better than Eboue as DM.
People forget how good Song was at the end of last season though. Even if we buy Matuidi, Song could play his way in front of him. That said, I think we need a new CM to really push for the title, if its just to give us some variation and true competition for the spot.
