I just happened to be curious why all you guys chose City as your team to support. Whether it be running in the family, location, etc..
Personally, I was a baseball fan as a little kid here in New York City and supported the Mets. They were always overshadowed by the Big Yankees. Not much of a baseball fan anymore but I saw the relation with the whole United/City rivalry. So I joined MCFC in the 2006/2007 season, where they finished bottom half. Not a glory hunter! :D

As with most North American based fans I found City rather than being born into it.
As a young person I always had a thing for all things English -- my family has roots in England and we still have a few members that live there (albeit none that are close to me). So, back in the '80s I was excited to find out that my British cousins were visiting. Eager to impress them, and new to following soccer (the best one could back then) I decided that I needed to pick a team to support. Always a fan of underdogs, and already seeing that United got a lot of attention, I choose City.
Over the next few weeks I learned as much as I could about City (which wasn't much as this was pre-internet) in an effort to impress. It's unclear how successful I was as it turns out the family are Bristol City fans - Oh well, the damage was done (I do, for the record, have a "soft spot" for Bristol City now though).
For the next few years I was a check-the-newspaper-to-see-how-they-did fan (there wasn't much choice, I was too young to find a seedy bar showing the games and, as I said, there was no such thing in Eastern Ontario as the Internet). When I went to university in the early 90s I started to follow the team more closely on Usenet and, finally, in about 1996-ish I was able to find a way to see the odd game here and there.
The affection has grown from there -- I thank the relegation years for helping me grow more attached actually. Obviously It's been a God-send the last 4-5 years with pretty much every game available -- I think I saw about 35 games last season.
I still haven't made it over (I've never been further north than Bristol actually) so that's the next step. I'm hoping I can swing it sometime in the 09-10 season.

That's great! It seems that a lot of City fans outside of the UK are attracted by the whole "underdog" status of the club. And same here, haven't been to Manchester..

I am a masochist, although slightly a worried one at the moment ;)
Seriously, although I don't live in Manchester I have relatives who lived near Maine Rd and when we used to visit them my uncle would take me along to games.
That was in the mid 70's & I fell in love with the amazing atmosphere and football that was being played...

Hope you & all fans from foreign fields can get over to see a game this season!
BTW. Toronto was the team I had a sweet spot for during the year MLS was on UK TV, great fans :)

I became a City fan for practically the same reason, just two years later.

The most important thing City has going for it is the Fans!
Despite all we have put up with, both on and off the pitch. The humour (although very dark at times) and loyalty shown to both the club and fellow fans is amazing.
Despite what Garry Cook thinks I'm proud to as CTID :)
I'd always been interested in the EPL, but never had a way to watch it really so i never jumped onto a team. I guess i had leanings towards the 'big four', as they were so much more accessible to a fan back then. Then one day, my family decided to take a trip up to the Gold Coast (Upper QLD), stayed in a hotel which had the wonder of 'cable tv', turned it on and found a soccer game on. Manchester City vs Newcastle, seemed like a good way to waste some time late at night so i grabbed a drink and sat back and enjoyed.
It was love at first sight, Darren Huckerby scored one of the ugliest goals of his career and we won 1-0. Ever since then i've followed City, firstly through newpapers and then slowly the internet. Joined this forum, and then moved onto mancityforum.net as well and gradually increased my knowledge about all things city. Then my family finally got cable and i've practically watched every game since the start of last year.
Will be making a trip to Europe at the end of hte year, and hoping to get to go to COMS.

I'm a Mancunian and my entire family is Red - Man U. I always refused to conform even as a kid so that should explain why I am a Blue. My dad, a Man U season ticket holder, can't take enough shots at City and their woes. I hope I can turn the tide against him shortly as we are on the up while the rags could be on the down, especially if they continue to be Tesco Madrid's feeder team.

I started watching when Sun Jihai joined the team, I think my first EPL city game was Leeds v City and Leeds won 2-1. After a few seasons I noticed I was drawn to the damn team. I for one did not pick it for the underdog status, I already have my local team for that!
Someday I will attend a City game live, I just have to make sure my heart is healthy enough to sit through the roller coaster ride for 90 minutes.

I used to be a fan of all EPL teams with Americans on them. When Claudio Reyna joined City I started to keep up with them and watch them when I could. I liked the way the played and they reminded me of my local sports teams. I ended up enjoying watching City more than anyone else and became a City fan.

I've supported City ever since the late 70's when City greats like Rodney Marsh and Dennis Tueart came to the States to play in the NASL. Man City came across as the anti-establishment, anti Man United club!!

I grew up outside Manchester, only it was the small industrial city in New England. As a life long Boston Redsox fan I was (at the time) very familiar with disappointment so when City opened their season in '95 by going fifteen games without a win, something just clicked.

My father lived in Ardwick as boy and then went for work to Spain and met my mum, and we have gone back and forth ever since. He's been life-long City supporter and used to talk about them and tell stories all the time. So on one trip back he took me to Maine Road for the derby. He wasn't able to get anything except near the visitor's section, so I was yelled at and had a bottle thrown at my head by some Rags. I was hooked. We lost on the day but I knew City was my club. That was the year we finished second to Liverpool in the league.

Manchester City is the first team in the EPL to use a Chinese player regularly. Even though Sun Jihai is now gone, I fell in love with the Citeh passion. I've made up my mind to follow Citeh for the rest of my life, regardless of performance. Manchester City has my loyalty for life. Even without the money that we have, I still bleed City Blue.

Passed down through the generations for me. I didn't actually start getting into though until the Kiki Musampa/Claudio Reyna/Ben Thatcher squad under Keegan. Needless to say our sudden influx of money is quite the transition.

I started around the same time, SWP was awesome. Here's my story if you care to listen.
I played American Football in high school.
I played in PA in a town were there was two high schools with practically the same name, we shared a school district and stadium.
My high school team was very good we had some great players and won some great games and finished my senior year with a very good record.
But our cross town rivals, not only won the league every single year but they also won the State Championship every single year. How many times I had to say "NO THE OTHER ONE!"
No matter what my team did, we were always in the massive shadow of our rivals.
When I was young I wasn't a huge soccer fan (few football players are) and wasn't even sure there was another team in Manchester but when the game actually started being shown on television over here and I saw this amazing team in light blue.
Well lets just say... I didn't choose City... I was City!
