At last check, MLS commissioner Don Garber said Chivas owner Jorge Vergara was "leaning toward" San Diego, but every day seems to bring a new twist.
MLS had hoped to make an announcement later this week, ahead of Sunday's MLS championship game at The Home Depot Center in Carson. But Vergara has been talking about a wide range of options, from San Diego to bringing a second team to Los Angeles to going out of state, and it might be another few weeks before he settles on a city.

This is from Wednesday.

Some Babelfish nuggets:
the group of investors of the MLS will meet incoming Wednesday in New York to treat the subject,
(Tuesday), the (leaders) of the Guadalajara met again with people of the Anschutz Group, owner of the Home Depot Center and the Galaxy, to follow the negotiation process.
Kids the USA would have a base of nine Mexican players and the rest would be conformed by mexicoamericanos or players of other Latin countries.
This will be the first equipment in Spanish of the MLS. The technician will speak Spanish, the players will speak Spanish and the practical ones will be in Spanish. We want to be an equipment of the community. By regulation we will have three foreigners who would come from the equipment that plays in Mexico. They will be of first level, since we are going to enter the match hard. The other six would be smaller elements of 21 years than they do not occupy seat of foreign and the rest, as I said, with other Latins, it affirmed.
Still talking about LA or Chicago.

I think I just heard air-raid sirens. . . :(
Let the fire-storm begin.
I'm a bit confused, even with corrected spanish (i.e. not "equipment") this is difficult to understand. The team will have 9 mexican players, but then they say "by regulation, they will have 3 mexican players. . ."
alguien?

They will use transitional and youth internationals for spots beyond the three Senior internationals.

If this is true this entirely unhealthy for this league.
While I am somewhat hesitant against a latin american based team, I think to put so much emphasis solely on mexican nationals is a mistake. The latin american population i am familiar with is rarely of mexican descent, but rather central american. I know there are many more mexicans than other nationalities in cities like chicago or LA, etc, but anywhere else, seems to me as many are central american as are mexican.
This is just a bad idea, and it pains me alot.

The Dallas Burn could do the same exact thing if they chose.
So could DC United.
Or the Revolution.

Doesn't the Chivas using 6 TI slots limit the number open to other teams? Isn't it a rule where there can only be 20 in the whole league at the same time? That would mean any team having more than 2 would be poaching other teams TI's wouldn't it?
Also, since they are limited to 3 SI's, and a player could only be a TI until he turns 24, wouldn't this then really turn the Chivas into a farm team for the Mexican team? I mean if they are going to be at their limit of SI's all the time, what's going to happen to these 6 TI's when they hit 24?

As for the poaching, DC poached Adu from Dallas, NY poached Walker in the weighted lottery when they should not have even been eligible for him, etc... So the shady player movement is already well established.
As for what happens at 24, good question. Perhaps they rotate back to Mexico and get replaced, or maybe by that time they will have an American wife.
My concern is that the Chivas USA will end up with young Mexicans who will make more money in MLS than they could in Mexico. If that is the case, I wonder about their quality. Of course, Vergara has plenty of money to throw around and he could easily get by the cap by "hiring" a player brother or wife to anwer the phones for 100K a year

The Metros have four. Aren't they preventing other teams from having T-I players?
If they turn into a farm team, I personally dont care. As long as the players are playing hard, it's soccer.

Hmm. You think Vergara would pay sub-standard players more to come to the US? Wouldn't the team be non-competitive then? And if it were competitive, I guess I wouldn't be too concerned about their quality or making more money in the US than in MExico.
As for salary cap hijinks, it's certainly possible-- but why would Vergara be any more likely to try to hire a player's wife for 100k than, say, Lamar Hunt?

I used to be against Chivas ans Club America coming in and owning/operating MLS franchises. But now I can't wait for them to come. The number of fans these clubs have here in ALL regions in this country is unbelievable. I live in an area that is 97% caucasion but the hispanic community is growing everyday. These folks love their futbol and when I go shopping or around town it's COMMONPLACE for me to see a chico wearing an America kit or a Chivas hat. I really think the league will grow substantially when these teams start playing. I can see MLS rivaling the top leagues in europe in the next decade. I see MLS becoming THE league in this hemisphere no doubt about it WITHOUT ESPN and the traditional sports media becasue there are so m any hispanic peoples here already and frankly MLS hasn't given them a reason to folow the league because its untimately the white man's league. Meaning the ownership and administration. Not that they aren't trying but how many Hispanic coaches are there? How much Latin money has been invested? As the league more and more belongs to them the fan support will grow. And I do think that there will be enough fans to bust out of NFL stadiums around the counry. I can see a 36 team MLS in this country by 2020.

Am I only one who thinks this thing has dragged on too long? Hopefully this meeting on Wednesday (if it is real) will settle some things--one way or the other. It's almost getting too late for new teams to be ready to go in 2005 and still Chivas is trying to pick a city. The only news we get is tidbits leaked, probably by someone working for Vergara, in the LA Opinion. When asked, Garber has directly contradicted some of what the Chivas people have said. I say get on with it. Somebody make a decision--tell them yes or tell them no.

Not that Vergara would pay more, just that if the free market system (no salary cap) in Mexico would not pay as much as MLS for a certain player says something about that players quality. Why would a Mexican come to MLS if can make more money in Mexico? If MLS salary is the best he can do, that is not encouraging.
And this is why Vergara might try the backdoor hijinks, so he can pay competive wages to pry good/decent players away from the MFL.

The more I think about it, the more I think Chivas should be in LA.
The reason is that they are a niche team (Mexican Americans). Don't put a niche team as the sole team in a market like Houston or San Diego. Give them a real team.
Let Chivas pay their franchise fee, spring up in LA, give us a classico/derby, and give more money to Uncle Phil by having them use the home depot center.
Let's hope this gets done so they can start playing.

Creo que en septiembre ya habremos determinado la sede y comenzaremos a trabajar para hacer de las Chivas USA una escuadra protagonista", dijo Vergara esta semana.
"I think by September we will have determined a site and we will begin to work to make Chivas USA a strong squad", said Vergara this week.
Oh, and there's lots of quotes about the international player rules. Vergara and the league are clearly on the same page on this issue.

bingo, for anyone that has seen a local derby live or on TV (for me its lazio-roma) knows what kind of nice boost it will be to spice this league up.
