Phish Or Wide Spread Panic?

I barely like either. I just figured this would be a good thread.

Phish gets the vote from me just because their fans tend to be more friendly.

I'm sure much to the disgust of everyone here, I love them both, but I prefer Phish by a country mile.

Where is the "I hope both bands die of AIDS" option?

A pox on them both.

Where is the "I hope both bands die of AIDS" option?

I always find it amusing the hate that bands like these seem to breed. People hate them more than stuff like Limp Bizkit or all these crap boy bands. I think the part I find so amusing is how do people hate music so much that is so absent from mainstream media? Neither band are on MTV or on the radio. Its not like there are 50 foot billboards of them on every corner of every city or that they're everywhere present in the entertainment media. Bands that can actually play their instruments well (and if you deny that, you lose all credibility with me...not that "my credit" really amounts to much) and are a non-mainstream subculture and they breed this much hate. I obviously can't ask this question over these boards because you could do "research," but I always ask people in person to name a few songs and most people usually can't name one. Or I'll ask them what they hate, and they'll say stuff like "Their fans are annoying." But in all honesty, that doesn't say anything about their music.

I'm not "crusading" for these bands because I could care less what other people like, I'm just curious what it is that brings out the venom from people about bands that have zero mainstream presence.

I post here enough that most of you know I have wide ranging music tastes, so I certainly can't be lumped in with the "stereotypical" fan of these groups.

If everybody can get past the childish quips, this could actually be an interesting thread.

i'll take phish solely on the basis of hoist - i like phish when they decide to play an actual song... but most of the time they go off on the springy woogly tangents that make my skin crawl

widespread panic should just confine themselves to a small area and calm the hell down - they do absolutely nothing for me and their "following" is among the more puzzling sects of humanity

I like some Widespread stuff but Phish wins in a landslide.

I own one Phish cd, and I used to listen to it a good bit. I've gotten bored when trying to listen to their live albums, though--15 minute jams just don't do it for me in that format. But overall, I like their sense of humor, and they can certainly play. Never seen them live, but would probably enjoy it.

On the other hand, I can't name a single Widespread Panic song, and yet somehow I've seen them live. I had never heard of them, but some friends were going back in 98 or so, and I had nothing better to do. I think they had a good bongo player, true? I was probably pretty burned, and don't remember the show much.
