Watching the game against Mexico its clear that the US is not only playing better, but is enjoying an increased level of respect. I'm impressed how the Spanish media played up the fact that the US is beating Mexico, in the US, on a pretty consistent basis. (And while we're at it as much as I want to beat them I've always respected Mexican soccer). They refer to this game as a classico or the equivalent on a regional basis of America Vs Chivas in Mexico.
STRANGLY ABSENT FROM THIS TREND IS THE AMERICAN NON-SOCCER MEDIA.
Outside of the latino stations not a single New York TV station gave as much as the score during their sportscasts. Today the newspapers in New York are barely mentioning the game if not totally ignoring it. Unless I missed something ESPN Sportscenter didn't say a word about the game (yes I know the game was on Fox Sportsworld but most US games are on ESPN).
Hey soccer fans don't get mad, get effective. Write a note or Email the media (I have) requesting that the blackout of soccer events be lifted. Victories like last night give us the credibility to make these demands.

Actually, the esteemed Grahame L Jones was there in person. It's just that he hasn't figured out what he's going to bitch about yet. After a US win, it usually takes him a day or two to mangle some perfectly good paper.

Apparently it was an event they didn't consider worthy of covering in person.I would have liked to think that the reason I saw nothing in the on-line print edition of The Washington Post or the print copy of USA Today is that the game ended too late for the East Coast editions (although that's not an excuse for The Post's final). But the lack of LA Times coverage means that the big dailies just didn't care.

And that sucks.

The Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram both had nice write-ups. They are the local dailies, so that is not unexpected. The DMN had two seperate articles, one covering the Mexico players/coach reactions etc. The other general coverage. Both also had front page above the fold pics of the US fans or US team.
