View Full Version : I Am a Musical Hermit...please help.

I don't listen to the radio much.
I don't pirate music from the internet.
There are three or four bands that I look for new releases from... other than that I don't buy albums.
I just don't have the money to be throwing at cd's. However due to the end of my classes for the semester and the beginning of full time work I will have a little more money to play with. I need your help. Take me out of my isolated (yet happy) log cabin in the middle of no where.
What are some albums you think I should check out?
To give anybody someplace to start I will list some of my favorite bands... (the three or four mentioned above.)
Pearl Jam
Tool
Metallica
Green Day
Thanks for the assistance.

Hard to start, best just to cast a wide net:
The Libertines Was given the title of the best band in the UK by the Guardian. Pretty punk, and sound a lot like the Clash (probably becasue their producer was in the Clash).
Radiohead Going by your list, their earlier stuff (the Bends in paticular) is a little more "rock" than stuff later on.
Weezer First two albums (The Blue Album and Pinkerton) are classic. Their newer two albums aren't as good but are still better than most of the stuff out there. Also Weezer is one of the ands that has encourages their fans to get the music off the Internet and have been involved in a few fights with their label over it.
Also the old school Red Hot Chilli Peppers had some great albums...now they are just aren't as good.

The Libertines: Never heard of them. I will check them out.
Radiohead: The older stuff might be worth checking out. I really can't stand much that I have heard from them. Radiohead is what the "deep" kids listen to to make themselves feel superior.
Weezer: Yes, the blue album is great. I don't have anything in between blue and green. I really should check weezer out.

I'm familar with Alice in Chains. Buying some of their stuff wouldn't be a bad Idea. I've been meaning to get their greatest hits disc.

If you're comparing Metallica to Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit, you have either not heard any of their new stuff or you are a complete moron. Metallicas newer stuff is based because it is different from their old stuff. But you can't really say, "Oh yeah, Load, they were just Ripping of _____."
Shut it.

I'd recommend listening to the samples on Amazon before purchasing. I've found that to be fairly helpful as I also don't listen to the radio. As for the Libertines, I love them but many people can't stand them. They're kind of raw (ie, not polished) and their lyrics are very much drug-culture related. You might try Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
I visit www.pitchforkmedia.com everyday for inspiration, as well as doing exactly what you've done - ask for recs from folks on this board. Whatever you do, stay away from Ryan Adams.

I second this -- absolutely incredible CD.
Some other good ones, varying in date and style:
Helmet - Meantime
Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
Radiohead - OK Computer
Cave In - Jupiter
Deftones - White Pony (Maynard sings a song on this one)
The Get Up Kids - Something To Write Home About

I would give another big thumbs up to Helmet's Meantime. That is probably the greatest really heavy album ever. They aren't metal, but they're definately heavy.

Strangely enough, I saw Helmet play in Jacksonville, AL back in high school. They played at Jacksonville State's gymnasium.

I'm sure you already heard Nirvana, Screaming Trees, and Soundgarden.
I'd second the rec for Pavement. You also might like this mostly early 90's stuff -
Rage against the Machine (first album)
Dinosaur Jr. (Where you been?, kind of like alternative Neil Young)
Fugazi (13 Songs, straight-edge punk)
Catherine Wheel (Chrome, somewhat lighter than the rest)
Faith No More (Angel Dust, punkish, an acquired taste)
Rollins Band (The End of Silence, heavy stuff, the man from Black Flag)
Folk Implosion (Dare to Be Surprised)
Rammstein (Sehnsucht, German metal)
Sex Pistols (Never Mind the Bollocks, 70's Brit punk)
Social Distortion (Social Distortion, rockabilly punk)

Calm down, dude. I put the smilie in there for a reason, you know. (And if this actually did offened you, one good advice: never go to a Heavy Metal board.)

It would be pretty obvious for me to list the band that is the source of my user name, but I'll do it anyways. From U2, mostly I would recommend their more experimental stuff based on your music preferences, "Achtung Baby", "Zooropa", and "Pop".
Some harder material that is good would be "The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails and the Audioslave album. Also for more of a rock/techno slant, if you're into that, I really like the latest Crystal Method album, "Legion of Boom".
If you like Green Day, check out the original, The Clash's "London Calling".
Good poppier rock includes Blur's "Modern Life is Rubbish", "Parklife" and also Oasis' first album, "Definitely Maybe" (even if you hate their more popular stuff, I think their first album is vastly underappreciated).

After I posted I realized you were probably kidding. Sorry, It's just frustrating because any time I mention metallica to anyone I get the "I only like old metallica" shit.
Thanks for all your recommendations... i'll comment further later. I'm off to go play soccer right now.

Interesting, since I also like deuteriumoxide's musical preferences and I don't care much for later U2... more of a "Under A Blood Red Sky" fan...
I second the suggestions for Alice in Chains, Helmet and Rammstein; also suggest Disturbed and Smashing Pumpkins...
