US/Grenada will be my first trip to Columbus and I was wondering if there are any hotel recommendations....

The wife is afraid that I am going to stick her with the cheapest hotel and that we will end up in a undesirable area of Columbus (are there any???)...

But I am going to try to keep the costs to a minimum....

I don't know how good the hotel Is because I've never stayed there, but I have reservations at the Columbus Days Inn Fairgrounds and its roughly $50 a night. Its in the same fairground area as Crew Stadium is so I suspect safety shouldn't be a problem.

No more lurking.

My first time as well. I booked on Hotwire and got $68 a night for a suite staying at the DoubleTree. It's coming up at $160 on Expedia so a pretty decent deal, although no pool.
I just did another search on Hotwire and there is still one on there for $70 downtown with the same 3 1/2 star rating and same amenity list, so I'm pretty confident it'll return the Doubletree but obviously no guarantees. Good luck.
P.S. Anyone have any recommendations for restaurants/nightlife in the downtown area? Cheers.

Fiddlestick, eneste, and I think Dolemite stayed at the Fairgrounds day's inn..

I think it's a Holiday Inn that's just north of the stadium. Both are within reasonable walking distance.

The Adam's Mark downtown I think still has a Crew Fan special. Mention it, they really don't care if you're a crew fan or not.

Saturday - We're gonna plan something "official" for Saturday night after the Crew game. Last time, many people either went to the Crew game as individuals, families, or through whatever BS group they were a part of. Stay tuned for where and when.

There'll probably be an "official" intinerary of what we're doing and when. Last time, we started on Thursday since it was a long weekend. This time, we'll probably start Friday night or Saturday afternoon.

We stayed at the Fairgrounds Days Inn over LD weekend (KC match) last year. It wasn't TOO bad. Our normal hotel of choice is the Super8 on 161 and 71 (Dublin-Granville Rd.). Plenty of food and entertainment options nearby there (Giant Eagle across the parking lot, Waffle House in the parking lot, gentlemen's club for those of such tastes, plus all the restaurants on 161 heading east). Usually 47/night after tax.

Have stayed here many times when come to town, Best Western Clarmont: http://www.travel-hounds.com/hotelinfo/577

In the German Village, fabulous breakfast joint and other nightlife within walking distance. Great onsite bar too. Easy access to highway (not near stadium but honestly area around stadium ain't so great). So you would need transport to and from stadium (and from experience, Columbus cabs suck and blow so rent a car).

I can vouch for this hotel as well. Its my prefered hotel in Columbus, and I spend a lot of time there. Its reasonable, clean and great location. Walk to the Brewery Disctrict or German Village. But, yah, you need a car to get to the stadium. Heck you need a car to do just about anything in Columbus.

Hoops, I just tried to find a room there, but its already booked for that weekend.

There are other events in town that weekend (OSU graduation I believe) so book early.

Downtown hotels are convenient, but expensive. There are plenty of chain motels ringing the city along the interstates, but no night life.

So, here's a hidden gem for my fellow Sammers (sorry no link, they don't have a web site):

The German Village Inn
920 S. High Street
Columbus, OH 43206
(614) 443-6506

Its about a mile further south of the above mentioned Best Western, which makes it about a 20 minute drive to and from Crew Stadium. It's an old-fashioned motel with a center courtyard that's the parking lot, and balcony entrances that face inward. Its independently owned, not a chain. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it was recently renovated. Its not fancy, but its clean, comfortable and cheap. Rooms start at $54.

Again, once there you can walk to clubs, bars and restaraunts.

I stay there from time-to-time for Crew games, and I just made a reservation for Grenada.

If you're on a budget, it can't be beat.
