Interesting that several people have mentioned Sports Night when that show seemed to go out of its way to make fun of soccer. I don't mind a few laughs at soccer's expense (for instance the Simpson's riot episode) but Sports Night started to annoy me a bit on that account, and I did start off really liking the show.

it seemed to me that was a gentle jab at the attitude of certain sports journalists rather than an actual dislike shining through

Almost every show gets to the point that even long time fans feel it's time for it to end, but there are a few shows I felt didn't enjoy nearly as long a run as they deserved.

Quark. A summer replacement that despite a good following, wasn't picked up the following autumn. It was never intended to last more than just the summer months, but it would have been nice to see it get picked up for a season or two.

WKRP. Very funny show that often tried to make some sort of statement. CBS killed the show by constantly moving its time slot. It was in the top 10 in the ratings when it was cancelled. I still think one of the funniest lines in TV history is
"As God is my witness, I thought that turkeys could fly!"

Get a Life. A fox show with Chris Elliott playing a paperboy who still lives with his parents. This show was quite funny and could have used another season or two.

Police Squad. I think this might also have been just a summer replacement that didn't get picked up. They made a few movies out of it a few years later that were less funny than the original show.

Arrested Development. One of the funniest shows on TV right now, but it appears doomed to not survive to a second season. The critics and a very small number of viewers love this show. Part of the problem may be that you have to have watched it pretty much every week to have a feel for what is going on so there aren't very many new viewers discovering it.

I've got a list as long as my arm. Many of these shows simply deserved more time - it's still unknown if they actually would have turned out to be good. A few off the top of my head...

Futurama
The Tick
Family Guy
Keen Eddie
Firefly
(Anyone notice a trend?)
Farscape

Farscape: I was late to the party (started watching in 2002) but nevertheless, enjoyed catching up via DVD.

Freaks & Geeks: just re-watched the entire series on DVD (I love netflix). What a quality series.

Undeclared: helped soften the disappointment of Freaks & Geeks being canceled the previous year, only to suffer the same fate.

Angel: continued the great stories of Buffyverse. Will miss it next season.

Firefly: Unique show.

Sportsnite: entertaining, witty dialogue.

Wonderfalls: started out great (first couple of episodes), next two were just OK. Still disappointed that we could not see the series develop.

MLS Extra Time: MLS Wrap is good but the original was better ;-)

Others: Karen Sisco, Now and Then, Boomtown

All of these shows had something going for them, and although weren't great, they deserved to be nurtured a bit... but were never given the chance to become anything due to bad early ratings. Some didn't even last an entire season:

Relativity (ABC, 1996-1997)

Pasadena (FOX, 2001-2002)

Undeclared (FOX, 2001-2002)

Robbery Homicide Division (CBS, 2002-2003)

The Agency (ABC, 2002-2003)

Line of Fire (ABC, 2003-2004) - not confirmed as canceled, but no new eps have been ordered.

Didn't they have an episode where the production staff correctly rattled off all 10 (or 12?) MLS team names? I don't think it was anti-soccer at all. Yes, there were jokes about soccer, but as is the case with SporsCenter, the jokes were about soccer's status as the redheaded stepchild of sports rather than the sport itself. That is to say, the jokes were more satirical than insulting.

Undeclared, NewsRadio (although it was never going to survive Phil Hartman's death)... and why oh why did they have to cancel Felicity??
