The story speculates Firpo may take their place. Googlefished: "Regarding participation in the Chalatenango Concachampions been speculated that the location of the scorpions will be taken by the bulls of Luis Angel Firpo, as the runners in the closing tournament."

Speculation is that the second-place team -- Firpo -- would replace them as DCU's opponent.

Santa Rosa de Lima is the club that is looking to purchase the spot.

I wonder if the travel expenses to DC were the final straw? It certainly wasn't stadium expenses.

Didn't we play LA Firpo in '96 or '97?

Gotta love a soccer team named for a boxer.

I believe it was '97 when there was a doubleheader at RFK on a very hot Friday night. Game #1 was LA Galaxy vs Firpo. Game #2 was Dc United vs a team from Trinidad whose nickname was the "Oil Boys". Everyone was there to see Firpo, and by the time the DC United game started, stuff was flying everywhere and me and my son high-tailed the heck out of there. This was before Diaz Arce left.
If we play Firpo on a wednsday, the crowd will probably be as big as Chivas Guadalajara on a Saturday. Bring your raincoat and a riot helmet.

I believe that Firpo lost, and because of that, they had to become an affiliate of the Galaxy -- hence, LA Firpo.

That was nuts. And Firpo was Diaz Arce's team, just before he came to DC United in 1996.

I call shenanigans.

Follow the money trail to Jack Warner's private resort.

Ummmm..... I'm not sure how much of this is facetious, but I will maybe correct some things previously stated, assuming these facts are indeed needed. If not carry on and prentend I was never here.

We played Firpo in 1996 and won 2-1. The game was scheduled as part of the payment for Raul Diaz Arce signing with MLS, and there was som talk of Arce playing 45 for each side ala Pele and Santos, but he played the whole 90 for DC.

There was no double header in 1996, although DC played "United Petrotrin" in 1997 in the CONCACAF Cup as part of a double header with LA Galaxy playing Cruz Azul. And of course, the LA part of the name is from "Luis Angel Firpo", the name of the boxer, not from losing to the Galaxy.

Again, if the joke whizzed right by me. Agologies.

Oh, and as for some other team sliding into Chalatenango's slot, it would not shock me a bit if money and Jack Warner were not used in the same sentence somewhere along the line.

Mike--slight correction: The Galaxy did play LA Firpo in the quarterfinals of 1997 CONCACAF Champions Cup, the same round in which we played United Petrotrin. I do not know where this game was played, but it was played ten days before the semis and final/3rd place game which were double headers at RFK. In the semis, we lost to the Gals 0-1. I believe this was the first time we were shutout at RFK. Cruz Azul beat Chivas in the other semi and then beat the Gals for the Championship. We tied Chivas in the 3rd place game.

Two more articles, in Spanish. I'd say this confirms that Chalatenango has sold their place in the first division, but no new info as to what happens with the CL. Interestingly, Nejapa almost sold their first division spot, too.

i didnt know it was allowed that you could sell your spot in a league.....so what stops say barcamiami from offering FCD 100million for the spot, mmm?

They paid 150k.

Different leagues, different rules. If Chalatenango were insolvent, anyway, they could've been forced down or forced to find funds. Monaco faced that, recently.

Yea, I was there, it sounds crazy now, but there was a double header at RFK where LA Galaxy was the opening act. I remember it was really, really hot and that the Firpo players knew they were playing a "home" match; when the national anthems were finished, they turned and clapped at the fans. I wasn't at the later rounds.
Really guys, stop me if I've heard this before, but I have a good memory...it's just really, really short.

Yes, it was a joke.

Great find on getting this article! WOW! DC United hosting Firpo at RFK. Wonder what the DCU players reaction to that one was. If its a Wed game, it could easily be 25,000. But if its a nice sunny night I wouldn't be amazed to see 35,000 - that would be amazing "interesting" atmosphere.
