It's hard to really say since it would be very difficult to find out populations of each city when they actually won it. But based on CURRENT population and my best information, that honor would seem to go to:

Brugges, Belgium: current population: 115,000 (Club Brugges 1978 finalists)

followed by

Leverkusen, Germany: 161,000 (Bayer Leverkusen 2002 finalists)

Saint-Etienne, France: 199,000 (ASSE 1976 finalists)

Eindhoven, Netherlands: 201,000 (PSV 1988 winners)

Brugges 1978 pop: 118,000

Saint-Etienne 1976 pop: 332,000

Eindhoven-Tivoli 1988 pop: 381,000

---

Monaco current pop: 34,700

I think that's what inspired the initial question. I think this is the first time AS Monaco has made it as far as the semifinals of the European Cup. Never made the final... which is why I didn't include it in my list. :-)

They once got to the EC 2 final though.

I think Monaco lost to Juventus in the semifinals of the '98 tournament. Not quite sure.

Stade Reims were there in 1956 and 1959. Don't know how big Reims is.
Leeds isn't all that big, but then not as small as Brugge.
And how big's Nottingham?

Isn't Leverkusen like a suburb of Koln or do people consider them separate areas?

No i do like it. But what are you trying to say, that the smaller the city the harder it is?

Nottingham is one of England's larger cities- metro population of over 600,000. (City proper is about 270,000).

And to answer bytheway, I think the "point" of this thread is just for comparison's sake, as Monaco (very tiny) is on the verge of making the final.

The point was to find out the smallest city to have a team in a European Cup/Champions League final. To see if there was a city with under 100,000 people. I would have thought their would have been at least one really small city to make a final but I guess it hasnt happened until this year maybe.

According to some world population charts at the time of their finals played some of the smallest cities were:

Stade de Reims - 181,985
St. Etienne - 206,608
Club Bruge KV - 118,146
Malmo FF - 230,381

And just and FYI at the time of it ECC victory the distrcit of Notingham had a population of 273,300 and today has a poluation of 613,726

I guess the better question would be, who was the smallest city to win/place in the finals of a UEFA/Fairs Cup?

I'd say it's Ipswich at 129,661

I'd say it's their opponents AZ '67 from Alkmaar at +- 90.000 present time.

AZ will be playing in Europe next year again btw. First time in 23 years.

Bastia (population circa 50000) played in the 1978 UEFA Cup final.
