Qualifying is right around the corner, and I guess it'd be a good time to see how the top teams first XI's are looking.

USA

3-5-2

GK-Friedel
RCB-Gibbs
CB-Pope
LCB-Bocanegra
RWM-Cherundolo
RCM-O'Brien
CM-Reyna
LCM-Donovan
LWM-Beasley
Withdrawn foward-Mathis
CF-McBride

My opinion, at least.

Canada

4-4-2

GK-Hirschfield
RB-Nswalia
CB-DeVos
CB-Hutchinson
LB-Brennan
DM-Aguiar
RM-Stalteri
LM-Hume
AM-DeGuzman
F-Radzinski
F-Peschisolido

Canada is the most underrated team in the region. That's a VERY good lineup. IMO, Canada goes to Germany through the 4th place playoff.

Canada is lucky that Puerto Rico has decided not to field a team for 2006...

Canada's Probable line-up will be

------------ Onstad ----------------

Stalteri----- De Vos------ Brennan
----------- McKenna ---------------

Nsaliwa----- Bircham ------Imhoff

----------- DeRosario--------------
------ Pesch ------- Radzinski

Yallop has stated that he would like all three of our dangerous strikers on the field at the same time. If he does that, this is what it should look like.
Players clubs:

Onstad (San Jose)
Stalteri (Werder Bremen)
De Vos (Captain - Wigan)
Brennan (Norwich)
McKenna (Hearts)
Nsaliwa (Jahn Regensburg)
Bircham (QPR)
Imhoff (St. Gallen)
De Rosario (San Jose)
Peschisolido (Derby)
Radzinski (Everton)

Our semi final group will be tough but the two teams that come out of there should finish in the top for of the final round.

There's no way he has a full team together and does not star DeGuzman in the spot you have Bircham. I think Ante Jazic will be the starting left back as well, with Brennan playing his more natural Left Mid spot. I'd also switch Stalteri and Nsaliwa, but that's just personal preference.

My Canada starting XI would look like this:

GK: Onstad (San Jose Earthquakes - MLS)
LB: Jazic (Rapid Vienna - Austrian Bundesliga)
CB: DeVos (Wigan Athletic - English Div. 1)
CB: Hutchinson (Helsingborg - Swedish Allsvenskan)
RB: Nsaliwa (Jahn Regensberg - German Bundesliga 2)
LM: Brennan (Norwich - English Premier League [newly promoted])
DM: Aguiar (Benfica - Portugal)
AM: DeGuzman (Hannover 96 - German Bundesliga)
RM: Stalteri (Werder Bremen - German Bundesliga)
F: Radzinski (Everton - English Premier League)
F: DeRosario (San Jose Earthquakes - MLS)

I think this thread should be expanded to include a full 20 man roster for qualifying, in which case I present my substitutes bench:

GK: Hirschfeld (Tottenham Hotspur - English Premier League)
GK: Stamatopolous (Enkopping - Swedish Allsvensken)
D/F: McKenna (Hearts - Scottish Premier League)
D/M: Klukowski (La Louviere - Belgium)
M: Imhof (St. Gallen - Switzerland)
D/M: Bent (Plymouth Argyle - English 1st Div. [newly promoted])
M: Bircham (Queen's Park Rangers - English 1st Div. [newly promoted])
M/F: Hume (Tranmere Rovers - English 2nd Div.)
F: Peschisolido (Derby County - English 1st Div.)

On a side note, there is apparently Bundesliga interest in both Imhof (Borussia M'Gladbach) and Jazic (Nurnberg). Not only that, but Iain Hume has been getting serious looks by lower table EPL clubs (Birmingham and Bolton, IIRC). If these rumours all come true (highly unlikely, for sure), and Wigan wins promotion, Canada could possibly have 5 EPL and 4 Bundesliga players in its lineup by the time the semi-final round starts (although Hirschfield is Keller's backup at Spurs).

That last post is unrealistic. Convey is quite left-footed. I think the US will end up using a 4-4-2, as the 3-5-2 demands a better right wingback than we have at the moment. We may use the 3-5-2 against Grenada, but I wouldn't play it against anyone stronger than Jamaica or El Salvador.

As to Costa Rica... what's Rolando Fonseca doing these days?

More realisitic than Cherundolo in midfield, plus he's played on the right before...

Why not? We aren't exactly overflowing with outside backs. He's fast, can track back and defend. And can get into the attack.

Is this argument really necessary? The point is to get a general idea of what teams' lineups will be, not hash out old arguments about which US players should play where.

Well, then tell the Canadians to take their De Guzman argument to the Canda boards. :p

Not according to what I read. I read that unlike in 2002 Qualifying, Puerto Rico was declared ineligible for being part of the United States.

Unlikely.

US Virgin Islands fielded a team.

I agree with TopDogg pretty much, I'd guess Yallop will start with: Onstad; Stalteri, McKenna, DeVos, Jazic; Imhof, Aguiar, DeGuzman, Brennan; DeRosario and Radzinski. I think Jazic will be in the back and I think Stalteri will probably be as well (not my preference though). But this isn't the place for a big long argument, everyone gets the basic idea of who Canada has.

Anyone have a potential T&T roster? I was curious what they had and how many of those youngsters are looking to be ready to break into the full side?

It would be cool to hear who Guatemala has as well . . .

"After many difficulties, the Puerto Rican Football Association has decided to forgo participation in the qualifying tournament for Germany '06 in order to reorganise their football structures, with the help of FIFA and CONCACAF."

I don't see how Onstad is warranted a starting spot. I mean, sure, he's had more club success. But Lars has had much better performances with Canada. Anyone remember the USA-Canada game in the 2002 Gold Cup?

The Guats? Ruiz and Garcia. That's all I know about them.

Same with TNT. Glenn, John, and Hislop. They lost a lot of good players. I don't expect them to do much in the hex.
