Well, someone had to mention it. Personally, I’d take the lad over the much esteemed Beck-Ham. http://skysports.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=199392&cpid=23
But if this lad goes to Real, then who knows. . .
We are also pursuing Roma defender Walter Samuel apparently. What happened to Chivu? Romans golden step-kid.
Also in the news…
Porto president Nuno Pinto has told Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich he will refuse to discuss any deal for manager Jose Mourinho. no mention of Cruyff to Chelsea in the press yet.
And Lampard is going to Inter. Oh, Lumpy, the days are gone when they said you were a big fat waste of money.

Duff? No. Joe Cole.....maybe. I think Kaka, Sheva or Nesta would look good in blue though:)

We shall see this summer, won't we? Not that I think we need any of the players above, but they'd sure be nice to have. Especially Sheva.

Real Betis's Spain winger Joaquín Sánchez has admitted he would not rule out a summer move to Chelsea. Joaquín said yesterday: "It seems they [Chelsea] are interested and they are negotiating with the [Betis] chairman. "I can't tell you any more - only that I don't dislike Chelsea."
I don't dislike Chelsea? nor do I sunshine :D

Wow, if you guys lock up Joaquin, you'll be bringing in probably the two best winger prospects in the game today, and this adding to Duff, would make your rotation absolutely dominant on the flanks. If you guys land a top notch finisher like Trez, you may run away with things next year.

when is somebody going to start the clear out thread? this squad is already bloated - if they sign 2 or 3 guys, i'd think that 5 or 6 would have to go
geremi? gronkjaer? jimmy floyd? crespo? gallas? melchiot? de lucas?

Some of the players will be gone for no other reason than being out of contract.
Melchiot - Hasselbaink - Petit - Bogarde - are just four that i can think of atm.

Well......some of the players bluedaddy listed aren't going anywhere. Gallas? Not a chance in the world. We're keeping Billy. If anything, Desailly might retire after Euro2004. If he does, we'll likely be shopping for another CB, as having 4 is probably a good idea; look how often Huth's been playing, anyway.
The players likely to leave who're with the squad already (i.e. not including Zenden and others on loan) are:
Petit
Melchiot
JFH
Bogarde (finally!)
Petit
Stanic
Players that might be either sold or loaned out are plenty:
Parker (lets face it - he's played well below expectations)
Geremi (see Parker)
Mutu (hasn't adjusted to the English game as well as I'd hoped)
Gronks (could stay as a sub - I'd rather he did)
Veron
Desailly
Joe Cole - I could see him being loaned out.
We're already bringing in Cech, Robben and likely Smertin (to replace Petit), who's been pretty good for Portsmouth. If Melchiot leaves, we'll need an experienced right back as Johnson gets ready, someone like Inter's Zanetti. We're buying a right wing - most likely Joaquin or Beckham. And if JFH leaves, I could see us taking back Forsell, and of course we'll make another pitch for Henry :D If Desailly retires, Chivu is a likely target.
Going to be a fun summer!

Agreed on:
Petit
Melchiot
JFH
Bogarde
Petit
Stanic
And some goalkeepers
Also think that Desailly is likely to call it a day, he’s been very obstreperous lately
Geremi – just hasn’t worked out has it
Gronks – with the arrival Robben and another winger, he’s way down in the pecking order
Veron – 3 years of mediocrity in English football, we know he’s good, but I honestly feel he’d be happy playing in Italy or Spain
Joe Cole & Parker I’d keep in the squad most definitely. Like Johnson they are at the core. The backbone of extremely talented young English players. They shouldn’t go anywhere.
Mutu I’d keep, especially if we sign his mate Chivu.
The rest will be up to the manager/coach to decide, whoever that might be.

If Kenyon has any balls at all, he'll put it plain to Abramovich that we shouldn't sell any of our English players.Hopefully our next manager will also come to terms with the obvious to everybody, except Ranieri, that J Cole can't play left wing.He belongs in the midle and should be kept at the team to play there.Regardless of who or however many right side midfielders come in the off season, i don't see a place next season for Geremi.Perhaps he'd like a loaner back to the Boro?
Young Parker needs a full season at the club to completely understand the role that a player like Makelele plays and should be given the chance to learn.
Lampard, Terry and Bridge and Johnson are going to be around for years to come.
The right full position will be filled with the addition of another player, there's no doubt about that as Melchiot is out of contract and nothing at all has been offered to him to stay as of yet - i think the writings plainly on the wall there for all to see.The only question remains as to whether a "seasoned" player will be brought in to take the burden off young Johnson as he continues to learn - or whether he'll be used as a squad player whilst we look for an every day proper right back.
Gallas leaving?You're 'aving a laff.
Although, i can see the end of Desailly this summer.
Another player - that Samuel fella perhaps? - will be brought in to keep the 4 center halves that are needed for a season long struggle on many fronts.
Huth, of course, being the 4th center half.
From the remainding players that have seen time on the pitch from the back line i think only Babayaro will be in doubt to keep his place.
Is he out of contract as well this summer? If so - bye bye Baba.
Gronkjaer was offered talks on a new contract, but he defered them to the off season. However, that was under the reign of Ranieri as manager.Who knows what a new gaffer will do with him - but, he still has another year left to run on the current one.
I think myself, personally, that the Veron experiment will survive yet another year.
So then - Melchiot, Desailly, Babayaro, Geremi, Petit, Stanic, Sullivan, Ambrosio, Bogarde all to go from the middle of the field to the back.
Whats most interesting will be the up front additions/losses.
Hasselbaink is gone - being out of contract, age, and generally not the player he once was.
Wouldn't be surprised to see Mutu gone as well.
Forssell may be offered a return, but, he'll want full time playing time.Something he's not going to get.Whether he himself will accept that is something only he knows.
I think Gudjohnson will survive another season.
So - Hasselbaink and Mutu out and Forssell and a yet to be bought player coming in.
That would make 11 of this seasons squad off in the summer.
Cech, Robben, a right winger, a right full and a striker to come in.
11 out 5 in.
We had 28 players listed on the team squad for this season.
That would make it 22 players - thats still a huge squad.
An overall loss of players, but a huge gain in talent and overall quality in depth!

Throw in a center back as well, if Desailly retires. Also, I see no reason not to keep Ambrosio as our third choice keeper. Macho and Sullivan are goners, but Ambrosio is quite good enough for an occasional spot on the bench.
I think either Veron or Cole have to go. If we bring in a right midfielder, where are they going to play? I would loan out Cole and keep Veron. If Veron finally has a breakthrough season next year, it might as well be for us. And Cole can finally get a chance to play every day and learn how to run a team. There's just no room for the both of them on the squad. As for Parker..........I just haven't been impressed. He seems a shadow of the player he was at Charlton, same as Geremi. We'll see. I'd rather loan him out as well, but I wouldn't complain if he spends some time on the bench.
Also, I think Smertin will be a direct replacement for Petit.

I can't see any of the on-loan players coming back next season.
Cole is obligated to the Addicks, i think Zenden will be outright sold off in the close season and Smertin to spend another season at Pompey.
There is room enough in the side i believe for both J Cole and Veron, each with different abilities to contribute to the team effort. The main stumbling block of course, is going to be playing time.If they both accept the sure to be continued - although much scaled back i would assume - rotation policy next season they would both be great players to keep.
The every day presence of Lampard would be in doubt though.
Macho was quite impressive when he was with Sunderland and no doubt but for the season ending injury would have seen extensive playing time thsi season.Ambrosio just doen't inspire confidence.

We should probably have another thread for the ins and outs and worth of keeping players.
Anyway - back to the subject of the thread title.
Here's another piece.

That's a good idea. I think we should borrow a page from ManUtd's forum and create a sticky thread called "transfer rumors". That way we can keep posting there without creating a new thread for every single player we've been linked with. And God knows we're linked with enough players.
