Over the past two years, some professional footballers have perfected the technique of tumbling dramatically to a level normally reserved for the Olympic high-diving pool, ushering in an unprecedented culture of cheating into the English game.
Now the perpetrators may be in for something of a culture shock themselves.
The select group of top-flight referees who are part of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) effectively declared war on those who would seek to deceive them yesterday.
Although the crackdown on the diving mentality that has crept stealthily into the domestic game will not begin in earnest until next season, the preliminary warning salvo has already been fired against potential transgressors.
