Pharaonic USA batters the Egyptians

In the end the Americans are the pharaohs. Goal differential has awarded the team of Bob Bradley. Something that no one even took into consideration. Three to nil for Donovan and his companions. A result that even flattered the Egyptians, who were never in the game. Without legs, without heart. The USA, however, put on a show while creating at least eight clear chances. Only the exploits of El Hadary, on the field wearing a turban for a forehead wound, contained the defeat. But the 3-0 brought second place for the USA, who move on to challenge Spain. The European Champions now concentrate on Donovan.

The key
Zidan wasn’t there. And it showed. Without his offensive power Egypt is another team. Too predictable. Even Aboutrika, another one of Shehata’s talented veterans, was unrecognizable. Egypt was toothless up front and a wreck in the back. Gomaa and Fathi were a couple of statues. The result: the USA went ahead after 22 minutes through Davies, who recovered a dirty ball and fooled the opposing defense. Then it was El Hadary’s turn to invent three miraculous saves.

USA unleashed
Bob Bradley’s team insisted. At the 7th minute Altidore, unmarked near the penalty spot, took a shot at what seemed to be a sure fire goal, but his conclusion was pushed off the line by Hani Said. The ball struck the chest and then the arm of the defender. Egypt seemed paralyzed. Their attack had only one plan: crosses from the third quarter of the field. Easy pickings for the gigantic DeMerit and Onyewu. It was no match. The Americans doubled their lead at the 19th minute when Bradley, on the fly, adjusted a delicious touch from the unstoppable Donovan. The U.S. coach then played another one of his cards by sending on Feilhaber, an attacker who, against Brazil, made Julio Cesar tremble. And at the 72nd minute Dempsey made it 3-0 with a perfect header. With the defense watching. Immobile. In the afternoon the Egyptian delegation had officially protested against a South African newspaper article that reported a "spicy" evening (ending in theft) involving Shehata’s team in their hotel after the victory against the Azzurri. Maybe it wasn’t so spicy after all. Perhaps just tepid?

Wow they really love Donovan. I wonder if any Italian teams will come knocking on Landon's door.

El Temblor, would be correct spanish, meaning, The Earthquake.

But yeah, that's huge props to Benny. Did he really look that good vs. Brazil?

Taken care of.

Three to nil for Donovan and his companions.

...the unstoppable Donovan.

Wow, they really do have a pretty high opinion of Donovan.

I hope Spain thinks all they have to do is shut down Donovan.

USA: 7.5

Guzan: 6.5 – Very reactive. Didn’t let his nerves betray him during the final assault from the Egyptians.

Spector: 6 – The usual tank. Didn’t always manage his physicality.

DeMerit: 6.5 – Went to town on the Egyptian crosses.

Onyewu: 6.5 – Dueled with Abdelghani. And won handily.

Bornstein: 6 – Took a full half to measure up Al Muhamadi.

Dempsey: 7.5 – Good geometry and the merit of having scored the qualifying goal.

M. Bradley: 7 – Was in every corner of the field. And scored an important goal.

Clark: 6 – Ground out miles.

Donovan: 8 – Untouchable. Provided assists and plays at a continuous rhythm. Shame that he got away from Italian soccer. Years ago Perugia had him in their hands. (MOTM for USA)

Davies: 7 – Scored a “Pippo” Inzaghi goal. All cunning.

Casey: 6.5 – Participated in the party.

Altidore: 6.5 – Up front his movement opened up precious passages for Donovan and Bradley.

Feilhaber: 6 – Waged war to protect the 3-0 score line.

B. Bradley: 7.5 – Presented a team that ran at a hundred miles an hour. And played soccer. The success was to his credit.

Egypt: 4

El Hadary: 6.5 – Made a hash out of Davies goal, then performed a series of miracles. Stayed on the field despite a wound to the forehead. Heroic. (MOTM for Egypt)

Fathi: 4 – The American attackers got past him with ease, as if he were a bowling pin.

A. Said: 5 – Got on the field but no one realized it.

H. Said: 5 – Always out of position.

Gomaa: 3 – Disastrous.

Farag: 5.5 – Clumsy every time he tried to partake in the action.

Shawky: 5.5 – Tried to create the minimum of a dam in front of the defense. But managed to do so only in spurts.

Abd Rabbou: 6 – One of their most lively players. Chipped the crossbar with a missile from outside the box.

Aboutrika: 5 – The talent is there. But he was unable to find he winning blow.

Abdelghani: 4 – Substituted Zidan. Two attackers from two different planets.

Abougrisha: 5.5 – Impalpable.

Ahmed Eid: 6 – The only one who sparked the Egyptian attack.

Ahmed Hassan: 5 – Another change that didn’t affect the game one iota.

Shehata: 4 – Couldn’t manage to find an alternative to the injured Zidan.

Casey gets 6.5 for participating in the party? Now I'm not so impressed with the individual evaluations.

On ESPN's Around the Horn a reporter said the Egyptian players had their wallets stolen by prostitutes!

I tend to believe something like that happened. It looks like the Egyptian players were too tired to play after banging South African whores! :p

The Italians are known for their hyperbole of course. They once suggested (circa 2002), somewhat tongue and cheek, that Bruce Arena as an Italian American be named the next Italian coach.

That being said, I love the way their comments translate. Always fun to read.

Whatever this Italian press is, they love the USMNT more than Sams Army could ever love them. It has been fun reading these re-caps. Don't know how knowledgable they are compared to, well anyone, but it has been a good lead.

Man-crush on Landon, they have.

Perugia? Surely Donovan is better than that.

La Gazzetta dello Sport is a big time paper so I'd expect their reporters to be very knowledgeable. Great read and thanks for the translation.

I'm pretty sure that just referred to the shot Benny took that beat the keeper and hit the underside of the bar.

I hope Spain thinks all they have to do is shut down Donovan.

All Spain really has to do is play their best. But, even if they suck, shutting down Donovan is a pretty sure bet for victory as well.
