According to this Sky Sports report, it would appear Gooch is Istanbul bound as talks with Birmingham stalled...

Should be noted that his wife is Iranian. I know that sounds kinda narrow-minded, but it can't hurt.

Very disappointing lateral move if it turns out to be the case.

In order to improve he needs to find a club in one of the big five leagues, not in a league that is the same level as Belgium.

What does have to do with Fenerbache? They're Turkish.

. . . and I only ask for scientific reasons - anyone have a pic of the wife. Persian women are niiiiiiiiiiiice! :D

On topic, I just don't want Gooch riding the pine in a WC year. That is my primary concern right now.

You must not follow European soccer much. The Turkish league is more like the Portuguese one than the Belgian league.

What he said. Moving to Turkey from Belgium is definitely a step up. I would put them as about the ninth best league in Europe behind England, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, Portugal, Holland, and Germany, obviously not in that order.

Not to mention Fenerbache, is a consistent Champions League performer.

I do believe that due to his EU passport he could have found a team in the Big 4 though.

My thoughts exactly.

Ukraine had two clubs in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup this season, and Shakhtar eventually won the whole thing. Ukraine's high rating is mostly based on this season. Before that, it was generally outside of the top 10.

Romania had two strong seasons in Europe from 2005-2007, but those were mostly anomalies. Before that it was generally outside of the top 20.

Playing at Federbache is better than playing for a bottom feeder Premier League team like Birmingham. This gets him CL football. If he shows well again Wednesday, a Spanish or Italian team likely jumps in for him anyways.

The 3 Istanbul teams are all damn good. Fenerbache may be the best of the bunch though my coworker will disagree.

Great move for Gooch if he plays.

In most years, the Turkish league would be rated ahead of all but EPL, Spain, Italy, Germany, France and perhaps Holland in Europe.
