Instead of spending his holiday on the beach, Arsenal’s Abou Diaby is working on his fitness with famous French personal trainer Renaud Longuevre.

The Gunners midfielder has opted against resting this summer, as he wants to gain muscle power and reach the next level, Longuevre has revealed.

As a consequence, the France international, who has been widely compared to Patrick Vieira, will practice with the track and field trainer for four weeks.

Well I certainly hope he is spending his nights watching videos to improve his decision making (learning to decide against dribbling).

its a great thing since he usually has muscular injuries... he will come good

I can't complain. If he works hard all summer, he potentially could fix his game and become the player we need him to be. Maybe not, but there's no harm in trying.

Indeed, this is the more likely motivation. Bulking up and getting stronger are not the same thing. I have always really liked Diaby, and I've been pretty disappointed in him. I'd love to see him make it, whether at DM or in some other role. I agree with Rewinder, though, he needs to do a lot more than just get stronger.

I was managing Arsenal in FM a few months ago, and the year after I gave up on him and flogged him off to Birmingham he was World Midfielder of the Year. If only...

admittedly, like prince said, if it keeps him healthier . . . then all the better.

can only improve his decision making if he is on the pitch playing, and not out injured

Well one thing I noticed alot last year was getting outmuscled off the ball. Hopefully this will help.

I would say Theo should follow Diaby as an example, but considering how he is taking part in both England NT qualifiers and the U-21s, I'll take him not getting injuried instead.

I might have missed something, but where does it say he is working on bulking up? It says working on fitness with a track and field spec. which makes me think its a speed and endurance thing, not a sitting in the gym lifting weights thing.

Track and field athletes do a hell of a lot of work with weights.

This is good news, its exactly what Steven Ireland did at this time last year and he hit the ground running. His stamina was unbelieveable last season going box-to-box.

Well, it does say he wants to gain muscle power, which a lot of the uninitiated would associate with looking like the Governator. And track and field does include a lot of big guys throwing heavy things, as well as sprinter-strength. A lot of injury prevention also involves strengthening small muscles, building stability, improving running mechanics, etc.

not really being outmuscled, diaby is a big dude and does well shielding the ball. his problem is trying to dribble out of everything which usually brings him into trouble

I thought that Theo did bulk up considerably this past season. He worked with the training staff after shoulder surgery.

I'm not sure Diaby has a best position, he doesn't read the game well enough to play holding mid and he can't tackle. He can dribble, has a decent passing range and a right foot, but other than that he just lacks the qualities to succeed at CM/AM. I think this will be his last season unless he can turn things around or if he wants to fight for a spot on the bench.

I'm glad for him, but he will only get better when he becomes a student of the game and stop relying solely on his talent. He is frustrating though, but still young,he plays in a position where you can't really judge untill they are over 25.see Felipe Mello, Di livio etc.A lot of people will compare him to Song but Billong is a defender who is also learning to be a midfielder whilst Diaby is the other way round, a midfielder with lots of attacking instincts .Anyway there is still some hope with him, even Theo regards him as Arsenals most skillful player

That's fantastic. It's actually very exciting to see a player recognize his faults or where he lacks and be motivated to improve. The man is ambitious, maybe sees his time at Arsenal starting to fade away and wants to elevate himself.

I've always supported him, several people here can attest to that.
