Allegedly involved in a murder-for-hire plot against a friend who was going to tell on him...at least according to ESPN (who also reported this during the first intermission of the Sens/Leafs game):

Danton scored a goal for the Blues in the recently ended playoff series v. the Sharks.

I'll reserve comment until seeing more details.

ESPN did report during one of their intermissions that they were getting two accounts, the second of which may involve his family in some way. I don't remember all the detials, but I do remember some **********ed up crap with his family; he was once named Mike Jefferson as a Devils prospect.

Biz Markie: And you say he's just a friend, oh baby you...

Allegedly this guy was no "friend" of Mike's, but actually his lover who was going to out Mike and potentially ruin his career.

Has this angle actually made it into any real news reports? I have to admit, this was my first thought as well (heck, I watched Playmakers... ;) ). And I heard it insinuated by Jim Rome and callers today.

I think it's pretty much out in the open that he wanted to kill the guy so that he wouldn't get outed. Not that I'm surprised that it's a St Louis Bluesy.

That part of the story never was used in the first news reports of this, but it was sort of hinted at. There was a quote from someone along the lines of Danton cooked up the plot because he felt that "he [the target] was going to leave him". You can see where it would come from, but if the NHL doesn't have enough on it's plate with CBA implosion, and agent-murder, if it were to leak that Danton was gay/bi-sexual, that would be even worse.

As Jefferson, he had some problems over playing time that ended when he refused an assignment to the Devils minor-league affiliate in Albany (And, having seen many River Rat games, I can't really say I blame him...), and he tried to make a fresh start in St. Louis.

Local sports talk station KNBR interviewed a STL journalist who's covering the story on Tuesday, and that journalist went out of his way to state that the "gay" angle is at this point a fabrication, according to his discussions with police and involved parties. Still could be a cover-up, but the journo was adamant about it not being reality.
