Garber said the league is in the best financial shape it has been in since its inception nine years ago...

Well, that's good news, yeah?

Two points that I got from the two USAToday articles. I think that it's great that Peter has broght this level orgranization and detail to DC United. I think that one of the problems with players in this country is that they fully understand what it takes to be a professional. I'm not trying to become one of those people that says we should do everything like the do across the pond, but this may be one of the things that can help our players in the long run.

The second point is that Dure cracks me up. Him and Bradley have become my favorite columnists.

Ives Galarcep from the Herald News picked Freddy Adu up at the airport yesterday and followed him around all day. I can't find the story on the website though.

Well, now, yeah. I supposed I could've played around with the tense in that reference.

Of course, Mitts has her TV career now, so are we sure she's going to do the long-distance thing? Is the other Detmer brother still in Philly? Is he single?

She has dated a Phillie (Pat Burrell) and an Eagle (Feeley) already. Maybe she should set her sights on a Sixer or a Flyer or one of the Kixx.

Apologies if this is old news, but La Opinion had a bit of interesting stuff on April 14th ...
http://www.laopinion.com/deportes/?rkey=00040413165701003539

1. To ensure the availability of Real Madrid's top players, they'd need to re-schedule the All-Star game.

2. Still no final decision on Chivas USA, with Houston and LA apparent contenders.

Also, it's been widely reported that DC has a Ghanaian player named "Nana" on trial ... promising the future headline "Nana-nan, Adu-du."

... or if he gets cut -- "Nana Nana, hey hey hey, goodbye."

Beau- Have a chat with Saraceno. Straighten him out!

Keeping Score: Jon Saraceno - USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/saraceno/2004-04-15-saraceno_x.htm)

In our time, pro soccer never will be a commercial force in this country.

I'll bet in May of 2002 this same guy said "In our time the USA will never make it past the 2nd round of the World Cup."

I'd want him to define "commercial force."

If he means in terms of men's professional outdoor league soccer generating revenue that even puts it in the same area code as other sports, he might be right. Profits, too, he might be right.

But I see lots and lots and lots of soccer-themed television commercials for all sorts of products, so if that's what he means, I can't agree with him. ;)

Jon enjoyed the D.C. season-opener. I might quibble with the term "commercial force," which is imprecise. The basic idea of the "Big Event" drawing bigger crowds than usual is true, though I suppose it's not exactly new.

But bear in mind -- he doesn't see the same ads we do. :)

I think if MLS can cultivate this generation of 15-20 year olds then we'll be surprised how much advertising weight soccer will carry.

Always be wary of someone who says "never" or otherwise guarantees something will or will not happen.
