pros?
cons?

I would think until he matures more physicly his slight frame would hold up better on the wing than as a forward and we need a right wing.

Can you imagine him on the right and Beasly on the left?

I've always felt that if Santino Quaranta got his game together, he would be a perfect right wing. He has speed, can hold onto the ball, and I think is much more comfortable in a passing position, then in a finishing one.

If by that you mean he doesn't know how to finish, you're pretty close. :) Sorry, that was just a cheap shot at Q's expense. It's been frustrating to watch him fail to live up to expectations.

Quaranta actually played a couple of matches for DC at right wing last year and did well. He surprised us with a level of defensive skill and tenacity that we didn't know he had. I think once he heals (again) he will play hard for Nowak. This kid actually has all the skills. i just hope he learns to use them.

I don't know if his string of injuries has reduced his speed. I do know that Nowak is quite taken with Santino's attitude and work ethic. I'm eager to see him return.

And if Richie Williams grew another foot he would be a perfect d-mid. Neither one is going to happen short of divine intervention.

I confess my hopes of Freddy on right wing and DMB on the left. We'll have to have a nickname thread for that duo.

Wow, look at that speed lineup we have developing. LD, DMB, Convey, plus Adu, Gaven, Mapp. Looks like our team is evolving into a fast AND skilled team in the next generation.

Until he matures more as a professional soccer player, and then as an international calibre soccer player, the size of his frame and its implications for his ideal position on the Nats is sort of a moot point.

Don't get me wrong. I want to see Freddy the magician doing his thing for the US as soon as he is capable, but we are getting a wee bit ahead of ourselves in this thread.

.... we are getting a wee bit ahead of ourselves in this thread.

That's exactly the fun part of it to me. I enjoy the predictive part of analysis on this site. I can be a wonk about tactics and rattle off all my ideas about formations all day, but if that happens then.......

1. I would come off like a know it all, like some in BS. (not you Samsarmy)
2. It wouldn't be much fun.
3. I would be taking myself and my opinion way too seriously.

Think about it- isn't that really the burden of a coach? Bruce's job is to be right about these players, and if he makes a mistake on judging the talent/readiness of a player at the int'l level, then he gets utterly crucified.

As fans, we have the all-out luxury to be (I'm taking from my own ideas here) Freddy fantasizers, Martino hopefuls, Cooper crazies, Spector speculators, Simek seekers, Mapp makers, or Memo takers.

As fans, we also have the all-out luxury to be (again, my own ideas) critical of Bruce's decisions on Armas, Hedjuk, Albright, Woly, Klein, Kiro, and many, many more.

In short, that's what makes it fun for me. I don't mind being wrong, as long as I can get excited about US Soccer. I'm sure many would agree with me.

COmpared to the people that wanted to call him into camp 2 years ago, I think this thread is downright reasonable! :-))

With Freddy at second forward ,theoretically he could go to either wing to aid in the development of the attack as the situation required.

If by 18-20 he's that good, why restrict him to one side of the pitch?

Lets not forget that Freddy did play in midfield, I believe as a winger, for most of the U-20 WC.

I would prefer to play Freddy in a withdrawn or midfield position, once he can prove that he is capable of receiving a full cap.

Given his skills and pace, and his ability to take people on and beat them, as evidenced in top underage competitions like the U-20 WC, and so forth, I think he would need more space to be able to beat people and create on the dribble.

In that case, it doesn't matter whether he plays on the wing or in a central position. Let him beat defenders, wherever he plays.

During Arena's approx. 6 year tenure he has played a left footed player at right wing for a total of about 45 minutes......

I specifically recall Convey playing there in the Confederation Cup and Beasley playing there for at least 45 minutes as well.

Are you sure of yourself?

Are you sure of yourself? As I recall, Convey started on the right against Cameroon. And didn't Beasley start there against Turkey? Eddie Lewis started both of those games on the left. Our starting midfield against Turkey was Lewis/Convey/Armas/Beasley, so a left footer had to be on the right at the beginning of that one (think it was Beasley).

That actually was the time I was thinking of, I thought they were only there for less than a half each, maybe it was 60 minutes total. ;)

But I can't remember it any other time, can you?

No, but I suspect there were. But you could be right.

However, Arena also has played without an attacking right wing a number of times, unless you count the role Reyna played against Holland -- when he was the midfielder who played the closest to the right on average.
