Just wondering. What pitch is generally considered the best playing surface in the world?

I would say the Nou Camp is the best. It also helps that the field is so wide.

The worst is unquestionably the San Siro. Unfortunately.

I would say Olympiastadion Munich. Some years ago there was a test in the kicker (biggest european football magazine) among the most important european stadiums and Munich had the best pitch, because it gets the most sunlight.

Highbury is the best in the Premiership and has been for ages. As for the rest, having been to the San Siro, I can confirm that it's a disgrace, although it can't help to have two teams playing on it. I can see how Munich's pitch would be good. From what you can see on TV there doesn't appear to be great big rooves over it, allowing sunlight and a good breeze to get to it which are both apparently important in maintaining a good playing surface.

The Nou Camp is pretty good, I've got grass marks on my trainers from going on it in October (that was a great day).

The best that I've seen is at Braga, obviously its very new but it looks like a carpet.

Old Trafford has a terrible pitch.

It looks like someone threw up over it all around.

Highbury is a fantastic pitch. It's just too bad they won't be there for much longer.

Ipswich's ground, Portman Road, is usually immaculate.

The worst is unquestionably the San Siro. Unfortunately. You've obviously not seen many CONCACAF fields. :)

They've replaced the pitch three times in five years at Old Trafford. The pitch sucks. Amsterdam ArenA has the worst pitch; it's awful. It's so bad, Ajax is looking into using artificial turf instead of grass. I know they've had to replace the pitch at least twice in three years. The best pitch is a Nou Camp.

True. You got me there. But I think we are just talking about the bigger stadiums in the world. And with the amount of money Milan and Inter spend on the San Siro every year it is a joke the way the field looks on matchdays.

The Azteca is in the CONCACAF and its always perfect. You can't really get much bigger than that stadium. ;)

Most of the pitches in the MFL and MLS are pretty nice

i remember watching the us play t&t. i swear my backyard looked better. I remember when we played Barbados. They pulled weeds off the field that were over 20 inches long right before kickoff.

You can go to Azteca's official website and look at some pictures of the stadium. It even has a section on its maintainence. The gardener walks about 10 kilometers a day maintaining the pitch.

Yeah, they still got that giant crater Matthaus made on the near-side touchline when he got bowled over by Van Basten in 1990. the good ol' days....
