Sorry but not the way we have been playing. Azteca is still Azteca.....

Wow. This board really is mercurial. I am so glad that we have a couple months until Azteca. We might actually have some healthy players left.
I was nervous about to night, but the boys gutted it out. As far as I'm concerned, anyone that thinks we can win in Azteca is delusional. And no-one can talk me into thinking we can get a tie there.
It'd be fun. And we do seem to have Mexico's number.
I suppose there's a small outside chance that they'll be so desperate that they'll crack under the pressure.
But Azteca is just too much of an advantage.
Anyone that thinks we can win there needs to take a step back. Seriously.

When we meet Mexico, we can be assured of a really intense backing for the home side. And I suspect Mexico might just be in an all out attack mode. Especially if they don't win midweek vs. T&T. That would leave them vulnerable to some well thought out counter attacks.
I'd like to end Mexico's World Cup ambitions with a shocker at the Azteca. But I'd settle for a draw there too.

Love the fire...but have you ever been to Azteca?
I went 4 years ago to the qualifier. I am speaking from first hand experience...it is a truly formidable place to play. Maybe not Saprissa where the 26,000 fans are literally on top of you. But, when Mexico plays well and scores, you have never heard such a roar. I still shake when I think what it was like when Borgetti and Sinha scored and I heard the roar of 110,000 rabid Tri fans.

Nah, Mexico will take care of business 2-1 at worst. U.S. will probably continue the trend and let in an early one...:(

True. But I still say that getting over the Azteca hump would take an effort of Herculean proportions for us.

BS at 8pm: We suck. We're going to miss the World Cup. We will allow 10 goals in SA. We have no chance against Mexico. Bradley sucks.
BS at 11pm: USA! USA! We're going to the World Cup. We can win at the Azteca. We can win a game in South Africa. Bradley sucks.

Fully aware of the daunting task that this is, but Mexico hasnt had this sort of pressure heaped up on them in a long.....long time. And if recent results indicate, they cant take the pressure. This is going to be such a pressure cooker for them i think they will be crushed by it. While our away performances have much to be desired, in the end we will have the momentum going into this match. Our pressure will be great, but for a change theirs will be greater. those 110,000 fans can turn on a dime if we get an early goal. We get at least a draw here IMO

This. Tonight was not a show of dominance or tremendous skill or anything else but simply a gut-check win under adversity. We basically had everything going against us but the advantage of playing on a good surface in front of close to 50% home supporters.
We were getting stomped in every which way the first 30 minutes, and for most of the game we were the second most skilled, but well played with dynamism and assertiveness and gutted out a win. Which we absolutely had to do.
That doesn't mean that I expect us to beat Mexico at Azteca after the Confed Cup. But Mexico is looking as lost as lost can be. I suspect they won't when we're in town, though. If there's one thing that can get Mexico motivated, it's facing us at home. (If there's another, it's Brazil.)

This much is true, but right now I'd feel pretty confident betting a hundred (if I had it to spare, that is ;) ) that we let in one in the first 10 mins. They almost got us for an early goal at home last time, in case anybody remembers.

Did you forget about the ES and CR games already? Are you predicting we have a real coach by then?
Bob throws up all over himself on the road. We will lose by two or three goals in Mexico.

Actually, they were (most likely) in worse shape in 2001 when we went down there and played like a bunch of scared patsies when we had a legitimate chance to put a dagger in them.
I don't expect anything different this time around, but getting the three tonight means we don't necessarily have to.

I remember the game, I cannot remember now if it was the 98 or 02 qualifier in Azteca. We went down a man, and still managed a draw at 0-0. The chants, which were CLEARLY audible on the TV, OLE-OLE-OLE were cascading down every time the US touched the ball. The coach promptly resigned in shame. :)

As much as I'd like to beat Mexico in August and put them in a deep hole, I don't think it is very likely.
1) I'd expect they take care of business vs. T&T midweek. That will give them 6 points, and at worst, 4th.
2) Our road form has been horrid. And while gutting out a come from behind 2-1 home win with the aid of a fortuitous hand ball and a set piece goal was certainly a relief, and an improvement over being pounded 3-1 earlier, I don't like our chances in Mexico.
Until one of the big four (Costa Rica, USA, Mexico, Honduras) stumble at home, this thing will be determined by road points.
So far:
Costa Rica 3 (win @T&T)
USA 1 (draw @ES)
Honduras 1 (draw @T&T)
Mexico 0.

OK. No need to read any more US - Honduras threads now. This pretty well covers it, I expect.

Our boys stood up to pressure, faced their own shortcomings and rose up to the challenge.
Mexico buckled.
Whatever it takes, we will get one point from Azteca. And that will be enough.

OK, and who became the coach after that? None other than the current coach of Mexico, Javier Aguirre.
I know my memory is bad sometimes, but I do believe they made it to the 2002 World Cup.
