Haha - I knew Mastreoni and Hejduk wouldn't be needed at the Confederations Cup. Only incorrect pick by me was Ching instead of Casey and the GKs.

can we assume that Heydude is hurt and wont play tomorrow and Bob thinks that Pablo sucks and won't play either.

Does this mean that we may revisit the Feilhaber-Clark pairing tomorrow night in Chicago?

There's a school of thought that says Mastroeni will captain the GC team.

I agree with this. Mastroeni and Hejduk, even if both are healthy, aren't needed at the CC because they have already been tested against top competition many times and can mentor the untested players at the Gold Cup.

Correct.

In general, I like the roster. Feilhaber, Clark, Casey, and Wynne are the surprises, but they are explained by injuries to guys like Cherundolo, Edu, and Ching.

I would have liked to see one more young winger like Rogers, but clearly BB has little faith in US wingers and feels guys like Kljestan can handle the outside midfield sub role.

I'm most pleased that Torres is going. I want to see him compete against powerful midfields from Italy and Brazil.

By the way, how many people on this forum honestly would have predicted Conor Casey would go to South Africa until Ching got replaced yesterday?

I would have predicted EJ or Cooper before Casey, but it looks like BB is rewarding somebody based on actual league form.

Gotta tell you, if guys like Spector, Adu, Davies and Benny only get around 60-100 minutes over the next 5 games, I'm completely opposed to them not anchoring the Gold Cup team.

Think each goalie will get one group stage match?

I hope that league form is part of the equation. But, I think it's as much a function of Casey being the closest thing to a Ching replacement.

No matter how you cut it, it will be interesting to see what we put out there.

With this roster, just about anything would be fine, except that the only thing I wouldn't like to see is a Bradley-Clark pairing.

Like one poster said, it would have been nice to add another winger with pace as Beasley doesn't look like he belongs on a competitive field at the moment. His technical ability, if he had that much to begin with, has waned to a terrible level. Robbie Rogers wouldn't have been a bad pick, but I'm hoping he gets tons of minutes in the Gold Cup.

I really hope Donovan and Dempsey serve as our wingers/outside mids in this tourney; they seem to be our best options.

I would also like to see Davies, Torres, Adu, Feilhaber, Spector, and Bornstein get some good time here. Possibly Casey, too.

Can't wait for Chicago tomorrow!

This roster is great. Love that Feilhaber made it over Mastro. Love that Casey made it over EJ. Only squabble is that Simek should have been chosen over Wynne, but he's got a year to prove himself.

So here's the lineup v. Italy (revenge time!)

----------Howard-----------
Spector-Gooch-Boca-Pearce
Dempsey-Bradley-FEILHABER-Donovan
-----Altidore--Casey----------

Offensive subs: Davies, Torres, Adu
Defensive subs: Beasley, Clark, Kljestan

I'm also a little disappointed with the appointment of Wynne considering his performance the other night. He looked significantly overwhelmed with the Costa Rican attack.

I would guess that Robles won't see any games unless Howard or Guzan get injured, but I think Guzan might see at least 1 of the 3 matches.

Hit it on the nail.
Casey is Ching is Casey. This the Casey that did not score a goal at the Olympics, had difficulty scoring in the BL (or was that BL2?), and begins his current MLS season scoring more than Donovan, Findley or Wolff? Who could blame BB for taking a chance.

Casey was a double-digit scorer in the 2.B. And though you're correct in that he blew his fair share of chance waaaay back in 2000, he also created more than his fair share of space for his strike-partners.

Casey is a hard worker, a physical presence, a good passer, an unselfish player, and like Ching, he creates space with very good runs and timing. Plus he's got good feet - much better than Ching.

I love the fact that he's on this team, and hope like hell he justifies my support (and Bob's, of course).

Must say I'm surprised Mastroeni and Hejduk weren't included, but there are sensible reasons and explanations for both: injury (Hejduk), they've already proven themselves, or they'll anchor the GC team. Still, why have Frankie on the GC team if Dolo is already there?

Still, after last night, I might want to look at Pablo vs. top level competition again to see if he still has it or not. Frankie has delivered consistently, and I think would have given us the best chance to win matches. But as a Crew fan, I'm hoping he'll be back next week.

The injuries to Cherundolo, Edu, and Ching opened up spots for Wynne, Feilhaber, and Casey IMHO, and I think all three of the latter deserve to go.

I'm kind of surprised at Robles over Hahnemann, but I'm not going to read too much into it.

Next round of questions are: do any players see double duty at CC and GC? MLS players would seem the most likely choices.

Guzan would seem to be an obvious choice. Wynne? Casey? Clark? Any more.

Still, all in all, I think BB made some good choices, but I'd have taken Frankie.

He should. He meets BB's main criteria .... never play a game for your club

I gotta add, I do love the roster.

I'd be happy seeing something like

----------------------Casey

------------------------?

Donovan-----------------------------------Dempsey
----------------Bradley-------anyonebutClark

My fear is that Donovan plays at forward, necessitating Beasley at left.

My dread is

-----------------------------Casey
-----------------------------Donovan

Beaz------------------------------------------------------Demps
--------------------Bradley-------------Clark
