From L.A. Times Article:

"Yet the slight sense of disappointment that enveloped the crowd at the start of the game turned to one of relief when Adu took the field to start the second half, his presence eliciting cheers and scattered standing ovations from the crowd, which included such celebrities as Robert Duvall, Will Ferrell and Mischa Barton."

This is an entertaining article, written prior to today's final where Hartlepool United won the U-19 Championship title in this year's Dallas Cup by defeating the Metrostars U-19 team.

I have been a Hartlepool fan for the past 35 years, and to win a competition like the U-19s Dallas cup is nothing less than a revelation!

As you can guess from the article, Hartlepool (or 'Pools' as we call ourselves) have been the laughing stock of English soccer for decades. We hold the record for the number of applications for re-election (i.e. finishing near the bottom of our 92 club league and having to apply cap-in-hand to fellow members for re-admittance) - 14 times since our entry in 1921! We also hold the record for the longest period without scoring a goal (I think it was 13 games in 1993).

But we have now turned ourselves around and recovered enough not only to sent a team to your competition (unthinkable only a few years ago) but to win at at our second attempt! The team will be greeted as heroes in Hartlepool, and they show great promise for the future.

I hope we see you again next year - no doubt the Metrostars will be out for revenge! If any of you send teams over to Europe, please drop in - you'll be most welcome.
