View Full Version : Chippy Charlie

Charlie Davies, who is already serving a 5 game suspension in the Allsvenskan, kicks a CR player who is lying on the ground (albeit flopping around like a little weeny).
I watch CD whenever I can. He is an exciting player. But he often resorts to tactics that could best be described as Guatamalen.
My feelings go both ways on this one. Part of me likes that we finally have a player who will throw in a little gamesmanship from time to time. But mainly I think Charlie's "chippy" side is reckless and unseemly.
Thoughts?

Better Chippy Charlie than Sulking Sacha.

I agree with you to an extent because all we need is to get a red card 10 minutes into a WC game. But it's a relief to see a player play with a chip on his shoulder. He was one of a select few players who looked disgusted with the way we were playing. All the vets sat back and took it.

Yeah i dont think he kicked him on purpose or hard at all.... the dude totally faked a head injury.... no idea what this is even about? He played great when he came on though.

I would agree with you if I hadn't watched him do similar things many times before. He definetly has a habit of "inadvertantly" kicking, hitting, and falling on other players. Also, he seems to be on the receiving end of a good number of light tackles that result in spectacular sprawling tumbles.
And again, I am a very big Charlie Davies fan. But I am on the fence about this particular trait.
What is this about?...How about, would the US team be well served by bit more ardido?

2 thoughts:
1) Yes he is chippy. But we could use a player like that, b/c we're too soft. So long as he knows how not to get kicked out.
2) He seems to cause a ton of physical problems for defenders.

Agreed. I like that he plays with a bit of passion and that he gets pissed off at poor play, on either side of the ball. Obviously he needs to realize the level of play and check that temper, but that's all part of a maturation process. It'll happen, and my guess if he was told that it was standing between him and more playing time, we'd see it tomorrow....

Forget what I said about ardido. We definetly need more.
I want to re-frame the debate.
If a U.S. player is in a position to kick, elbow, slap or wet willy an opposing player and get away with it, should he do it?

my goodness, what has American soccer come to when there's only one guy who "played with heart"? I thought it was the only way to play

I'm going to say no. Davies looked good last night EXCEPT for kicking that guy in the nuts. That was foolish b/c he could have and probablyo shoudl have been red carded for it. We don't need to play a man down b/c one of our guys has a thing for kicking guys in the balls, or viciously throwing elbows, etc. I'd expect that from Rafa Marquez, not from a USNat.

NEVER
He should elevate his game to score a goal, get an assist, shut down the player he is responsible for, etc...
I didn't like Davies STUPID stunt. You can play with a chip/passion without resorting to idiotic moves like that. We are not Mexico.

I didn't think he actually went through with the kick. He wanted to, and he started to, which is stupid, but I don't know if there was much actual contact.
I hardly blame him, though. The defender was wrapping his arms all around him, and then after sliding in to knock the ball away, the defender scissored Davies' ankles with his other leg. Very dangerous play, and never called for (especially at 3-0 in last ten minutes). Of course, Davies shouldn't react, but it's hard not to react when someone tries to injure you like that.
I liked his attitude. Also liked Freddy trying to calm him down.

GIve me someone like Davies (and Mathis back in the day) to a unmotivated, cold fish like Dempsey every day of the week.
After last night, I want players who want to be out there.

I agree he shouldn't retaliate but I am glad to see someone else saw the CR player try to scissor his legs. It doesn't justify Davies action but retaliation for someone trying to injure you is a little different situation than an unprovoked action.

Doing things that could possibly get you kicked out (if he did smash the guy's nuts) doesn't seem like wanting to be out there.
