Are you ready for the 5 referee system?
UEFA reports on the Five-official experiment in UEFA Europa League (http://www.uefa.com/uefa/keytopics/kind=524288/newsid=835399.html)
It didn't say anything about the 4th Official.

Hmm. It will be interesting to see the positioning diagrams for the PA AR's.
When do you shift (or do you) to the opposite side of the goal, for example. Do they just stay on the opposite side from the AR?
Without a flag, what are the signal mechanics I wonder.
What is the role/position of the AR and the PA-AR during PK's?
PA-AR's will only be used for the highest level matches I would guess. At the youth level for example, we used 4th Official for our State Cup Finals, I wonder if this takes off if there would be pressure to use the PA-AR's.

I have a question for you....
Did anyone see the "Third" Chelsea goal in the FA Cup Final? I'm telling you it went in and came out so fast that you would have had to be right next to the post to see it!
Where are these "goal judges" going to stand? And isn't something that after having goal judges for all these years, the NHL doesn't have them anymore?
Will they have flags or communicate by headset?
The whole thing is weird.

I just don't see how this could work in a domestic league.
England for example.
- 20 more refs/ar's from The Championship
- 20 from League One/Two to replace those
- 20 from Conference to replace those
and so on...

I am guessing these refs won't have to pass the fitness test, so in theory you could get experienced refs who have retired.

That will work well until they give or miss a penalty at Old Trafford.
"Why was a retired referee doing a PL game?"

This is ridiculous. Has anyone here had a case of AR-boredom only to miss a call because a team that was getting hammered for 30 minutes had a breakaway? Im guilty of it and im sure just about every ref out there is.
I cant honestly expect that one person will judge only something that comes up maybe twice per season in a given league, and then go on and get that call right.
I assume this is UEFA riding herd on this one since Sepp Blatter wants nothing to do with goalline tech.
Lets get a monitor for the 4th and keep it away from the coaches. Is it that hard to tack something onto Law 10 that says "In all sanctioned matches, the referee shall delay the restart of play and add time accordingly after a questionable goal has been scored" The referee will confer with the 4th official and nearest AR to determine if the incident has met the requirements of law 10.
If a goal is scored, restart with a kickoff
if there is a whistle with the ball in play (rebound, ball cleared off line, etc) restart with a dropped ball.
it happens very quickly in Hockey.

I'm telling you that the "Third" goal for Chelsea this past Saturday int he Final could not have ben seen with the naked eye. I thought it was in when I saw it live, but I still don't know if the whole of the ball crossed the whole of the line...even in slow motion.

On that last part, the GAR (I have no idea what to call them) will also watch for fouls and misconduct in (around?) the penalty area. So its not like they will be standing there waiting for the once a season call to happen.

I just saw one replay of it, but it was one of those where it was probably over the line. You could have 20 referees on the goal line and you would probably get 14 say it was a goal and 6 say it wasn't.
I'm not surprised the AR missed it. Besides being 40 yards away and not right on the goal line, its too much to ask a human's eyes and brain to adjust that quickly from crossbar to ground.

We could have used a GAR last night in our high school girls match. A goal kick/corner kick call that the CR couldn't see. The far side AR couldn't see, and I was the near side AR back with the 2LD 75 yards away. Unfortunately, the coach and I had a great view of the play, but no "reasonable" way to communicate it to the CR. who was 65 yards away. :o

They could be GLO's - Goal Line Officials
Or EAR's - Extra Assistant Referees
