The Sydney 2000 Olympics went the same way.

As the quote below shows that us Aussies can actually run a major sporting project effectively & profitably.

"In a sense, the release of these figures closes this very successful chapter in Australian sporting history. The Tournament embraced the nation and was made possible by unprecedented cooperation between the ARU, the IRB, the Australian rugby community, state and federal governments, volunteers and of course, the people of Australia."

John O'Neill, who was the CEO of the ARU for the past 7 years (including RWC 2003), is now the CEO of Australian Soccer.

Maybe one day FIFA may take notice and perhaps do the right thing wrt Australia & the FIFA World Cup.

Won't see it in my lifetime.

Yep. John O'Neill is the best placed, resourced & empowered Aussie (ever), to do that.

He has as his main priorities (over the next 3-5 years) as:
(1) getting the Australian Premier League (APL) up & running and being successful; AND
(2) sorting out the problems with the Australian National Team (Socceroos) & their perennial under-performance (for whatever reason).
