The player from Roanoke apparently had a two-week trial with Arsenal recently.

Karbassiyoon Receives Golden Boot Award at 2002 adidas ESP Event

Danny Karbassiyoon of Roanoke, Virginia received the Offensive Golden Boot award at the 2002 adidas Elite Soccer Program (ESP) that was held at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington in July. Karbassiyoon was one of three award winners as Patrick Phelan (Enfield, CT) received the Defensive Golden Boot honor and Brad Guzan (Lockport, IL) took home the Golden Glove award as the top Goalkeeper. Karbassiyoon, Phelan and Guzan were chosen as the top offensive player, defensive player and goalkeeper respectively from the top 150 high school players in the country.

The adidas ESP, which began in 1997, is an annual event that invites the top 150 male high school soccer players to one facility to train and perform in front of hundreds of coaches from the college and professional ranks as well as national team scouts. adidas ESP, which is officially sanctioned by US Youth Soccer, has become one of the most prestigious soccer events of the summer as well as a number one recruiting tool for college coaches. Athletes are chosen after a nationwide search by a team of scouts consisting of national team staff coaches as well as ODP regional staff coaches and key club coaches from the entire country.

These elite athletes also attend classroom sessions, which include SAT preparatory classes, Sports Psychology, Logic and Life Skills as well as hear from notable guest speakers within the soccer world. Guest speakers for the 2002 adidas ESP included Coach Bruce Arena and Defender Tony Sanneh from the US Men’s National Team as well as Juergen Klinsmann former German National team standout and World Cup Champion.

During its six years of existence, adidas ESP has attracted some impressive young talent. Several of these adidas ESP alumni are now making a name for themselves in the collegiate and professional ranks. On the collegiate level, over 400 alumni have taken to the fields of several of the top soccer programs in the country. Alumni were represented in 41 out of the 48 schools competing for the 2001 Men’s Division I College Cup. Among those players is Pat Noonan, who currently attends Indiana University where he was named the 2001 Big Ten Player of the Year and National Player of the Year runner-up.

Some notable alumni in the professional ranks include DaMarcus Beasley, who was the youngest player to sign an MLS contract in 1999. Beasley, who is currently a member of the Chicago Fire and US National Team, was named the 2001 US Soccer Male Athlete of the Year. Chris Carrieri was the first player selected in the 2001 MLS Draft after a stellar career at the University of North Carolina in which he led the nation in scoring with 25 goals in 24 games during the 2000 season. Recently in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft, 11 adidas ESP alumni were selected including the first overall pick Chris Gbandi and four other first round selections.
