I seem to recall quite vividly that when the Metrostars did the same exact play... and scored.. it was taken back by Ref Hall.

A BRITISH non-league footballer has scored the world’s fastest-ever goal — in just TWO SECONDS.
Striker Marc Burrows, 25, scored straight from the kick-off, helped by a strong wind, illustrated below.
He said yesterday: “My fellow striker Michael Ponter rolled the ball forward a couple of inches and I took a mighty swing at it.
“The wind was strong and the ball just sailed over their poor keeper.
“I was so stunned I didn’t really celebrate. I put my arms in the air and burst out laughing.”
Thrilled Marc went on to score a hat-trick as Cowes Sports reserves, from the Isle of Wight, beat Eastleigh reserves 5-3.
The sales consultant, a former trainee with Portsmouth FC, added: “I’ve tried something similar but it normally goes out for a throw in and I feel like a right prat.”
Manager Paul Sleep said after the game at Eastleigh, Hants: “Their goalkeeper was a little too far off his line. The poor lad looked totally shocked and amazed.”

Don't you have to roll the ball backward one revolution?
I wonder what the time is for the fastest red card.

To score this fast you need a "flying two-way wingback."
Either that or Chris Albright and a distracted Tony Meola.
Marindihna did this too (scored from kickoff) for the Memphis Rogues vs. the Chicago Sting in the ol' NASL (1980).
However, no matter how hard you shoot it, it takes more than 2 seconds to score (no one can hit a ball so hard that he crosses goalline that fast- you lose a second at the point of kickoff until the ball is struck 2nd time..covered 50-60 yards in 1 second? I think not.)...

I know this one:
Vinnie Jones, 4 seconds into the match.

Does anyone remember who shot that "fastest goal" for the metros? I think it was Clint, he booted it over the entire visiting team who was taking too long in a huddle.
Whistle blew, He kicked it, went in. Referee said "Um. No. I was just kidding about the whistle thing" Calamity ensued.

Yeah, that sucked. That goal should have stood. The ref thought he was still at the disco.

Yeah, 113, that was it! I was there and calamity did indeed ensue!
There really ought to be a worst call of the year award, given by the fans, just to let the refs know.
Goal of the year and worst call of the year....very MLS.

No, actually a kick-off is now a direct kick, much like a goal kick. The ball does need to move forward over the line though, but technically you could have one person take a shot right at the net without the other person touching it. And yes, I too remember the goal the Metros scored right off the kickoff that didn't count, I just don't remember against who.

I checked fifa's laws of the game. (They do not permit cut and paste) It is now the equivalent of a direct kick but there are some differences: like players on their side of the field. It is called a "Kick-off"
The "direct kick" is now known as the "direct free kick"
Interesting about a direct free kick is that if you kick the ball into your own goal, the goal does not count and the opponent gets a corner kick. What in the world is the purpose of denying the own goal?

It was actually Ross Paule I believe. Clint was out due to his knee injury.

Why would Ross Paule be playing center foward?
I think the opposing team was Colorado for some reason.

Actually, it was Clint Mathis who scored the goal. He kicked the ball over the LA Galaxy who were taking too long in the huddle. It was the start of the 2nd half and it was a playoff game. The referee did, however, call it back. (I guess that was the year we had a do over rule). But it wasn't Brad Hall, it was Noel Kenny. We went on to win anyway after staging a comeback when Greg Vanny got red carded and LA went down to 10 men.

And it was the kick off after the half (the metro goal), not the opening kick, so it wouldn't have counted as the fastest goal anyway. It was in the playoff game (http://www.mlsnet.com/games/01/0926lamet.html) where we won 4-1, only to lose in LA a few days later.
Paule was playing. Anyway, yeah, LA was in a huddle, Kenny asked them to get out of it. They stayed in the huddle, Kenny blew the whistle. Metro passed the ball from one to the other, shot, and scored. Then Kenny went "oh...that wasn't for you, I just want to get them out of the huddle."
That sucked. But we won the game anyway, and should have won that series. But, there's always this year...

Remember, Clint busted his knee (http://www.soccertimes.com/usteams/2001/jun06.htm) in June of 2001 in training camp. This was after playing the La Guerra Fria in Columbus in Feb 01, and the game in Honduras (http://www.soccertimes.com/usteams/2001/games/mar28.htm) in March 2001 where he won the game on the free kick.
If you don't want to believe MLS net, believe CNN.

The Galaxy appeared in control of the game when Sasha Victorine hit a side volley into the corner of the net in the fourth minute.
Faria thought he tied the game in the opening seconds of the second half on a shot from midfield while the Galaxy were still huddling.
The MetroStars believed referee Noel Kenny blew his whistle to start the half.
Kenny said he blew his whistle to get the Galaxy out of the huddle, so he disallowed the goal.
"My mother told me if I didn't have anything good to say to keep my mouth shut, so I better stitch my mouth right now," MetroStars defender Mike Petke said of the ruling.
The game turned three minutes later when Kenny gave Galaxy defender Greg Vanney his second yellow card for a tackle on Faria. That forced Los Angeles to play a man short the rest of the way.
etc. The game was September 26th, 2001, and Mathis was sidelined with a knee injury. He didn't play again for Metro until 2002.
Anyway, on to this season....
