micky's big day comes as no surprise, but did anyone see heskey today?!?! if owen and emu show this summer anything like they did today... proper noise could be made

simply put, i'm not sure i've seen heskey play better than he did today since leicester - was that his best liverpool match ever? was it a fluke or a signal that he's ready to step up for 3 lions?

Every once in a while Heskey has a good game for Liverpool and England. I remember when he battered Samuel all over Anfield in the Champions League about 3 seasons ago when Liverpool played Roma. I remember he had a great game against Germany when we beat them 5-1, I also remember he was man of the match on his England debut against Argentina. But unfortunately, for every great game he has, he has 25 crap ones. I think under a different manager, Heskey could be a respectable player, but under Houllier he will be crap more times than he isn't

what would be different under a new manager?

i dont know for sure...but ive never really beena fan of hesky at all. whoever said it before is right though, for every good game, he has 25 awful ones. that is englands problem: no fowards...besides owen taht is, if he is healthy, or god forbid in form. i love england and would like to see them do off france this summer. they need fowards who will attack the goal with pace and skill. schoals as a second foward would be something....just a thought maybe...it owuld free up another spot for a talented midfield. england needs goalscorers, espscially at a major tournament like euro.

Scholes will play behind the front 2 - Heskey is grossly underrated because he doesn't score a lot, but what people overlook is his contribution, in terms of holding the ball up, unsettling defenders and creating space for the others!

What are you laughing at? This is a 100% accurate assessment of Heskey's game.

He's frustrating because he doesn't use his talents to their full potential. But he works his socks off for the team and gives England options which none of our other strikers provide (Owen scores something like 50% more goals when playing alongside Heskey than with any other striker). He deserves some of the criticism he gets but most of the time the people slagging him off are those with an extremely superficial knowledge of the game.

grossly underrated is accurate? look we all know he holds up and battles - we also all know he misses sitter after sitter, gives the ball away like he's UNICEF & that he thinks good passing happens on the highway

yes, emu does all the little things... which is much more wonderful when he also does the odd big thing

Considering 99.9% of the time that Heskey is mentioned he receives criticism and abuse, I would say he is underrated, yes.

'Misses sitter after sitter' - eh? No he doesn't. OK so his passing may not be of the highest standard but he's not in the team to play pinpoint balls over 70 yards.

Nobody would argue that Heskey doesn't deserve some stick - as I said, he very rarely plays to his full potential. But he certainly does not deserve the unending abuse he receives from the media and supporters. If Houllier and Eriksson both consider him worthy of starting for their sides then I would suggest there must be something to his game that is of value to the team.

As soon as I first saw Bluedaddy going on his nationalistic rampage across BigSoccer I figured it was inevitable he would try and start a barely disguised troll thread in here. So predictable, so weak.

Heskey works hard for the team, he lacks confidence and some quality but his teamwork, strength and pace is enough to unsettle any defence when he's up for it, especially when paired with a small razor sharp goalscorer like Michael Owen. Even if he doesn't play well, Rooney will be in there ahead of him. Or if I had my way, Alan Smith.

and i knew you would take it as a troll thread - i was impressed and i wondered why he can't play like that all the time - while watching, i thought to myself 'he proved today he's quite capable of making it happen - i wonder if he aggravates england/liverpool fans after a GREAT match like that because it's like a tease' - i wanted somebody else's opinion (something you of course have no need for) - when he was at leicester, i thught he was going to be a star - yes he takes too much stick, but he deserves plenty as well - i never questioned his teamwork or physical attributes, so let's get real: he only unsettles defenses with those two qualities - everything else is usually a relief to the opposition and you know it

so stop whining all the time, it says more about you than it ever will about me

He aggravates Liverpool fans for precisely the reason that we all know that it is not inate ability or technique that is the problem, it is some mental factor that stops him from performing. FWIW, I believe it is down to feeling under pressure. It is noticeable that he plays best when his place is under threat or he feels he has something to prove. Just this week, for instance, Houllier used the build-up to the game with Blackburn to highlight the impending arrival of Djibril Cisse. His comments about how he expects his strikers to respond to the competition that transfer implies were unambiguously aimed at Heskey.

We all know he CAN play ... in his first season (when he had something to prove as the most expensive signing at the club, etc, etc) he scored 24 goals and was the sort of barnstorming centre-forward he was expected to be. That made him undroppable and it would appear that he fails to perform when in any kind of comfort zone.

The nonsense that is peddled about him by rival fans is exactly that - nonsense. Most fans, when thinking rationally about the issue, acknowledge the situation to be as stated here. That, unfortunately, does not solve the problem of how to get the big lug to snap out of it and start delivering on a consistent basis.

does he need to go back to CF? even if he became more consistent there it would still be a bit of a waste because he has other skills in his bag
